Sorry if this has been asked before but would a old computer with FreeNas running on it be an acceptable solution as a file server in an educational environment?
Could i check that the file sharing on the FreeNas allows you to use Active Directory from server 2008 R2 to give permissions and proper rights? i.e Students can only write to a shared folder not delete or move?

Cheers

Freenas runs well on a lower spec machine, although it can be a little ram hungry when using ZFS. I'm pretty sure you can use Ad to properly sort file permissions but I haven't tried. If I get a chance tomorrow I could knock together a quick server 2012 install in a vm and test it with my freenas server.
