Hey guys,

So having done away with Virgin TV,Im now looking for an alternative.

looks like my two options are

  • FreeSat
  • Youview

Im leaning more towards Freesat as it has a ton more channels,Can anyone recommend a decent Freesat Kit?..im concerned about getting a good dish for a proper signal.

What do you guys use? :)

These are the Freeview HD channels (subject to area):-

BBC One HD
BBC Two HD
ITV HD
4HD
Channel 5 HD
BBC Four HD
BBC News HD
Al Jazeera English HD
Channel 4+1 HD
4seven HD
QVC+1 HD
QVC Beauty HD
RT HD
CBBC HD
CBeebies HD

I have just switched from virgin to freesat and BT for my broadband, got a free you view as well, basically just freeview with the BT sport from what I can tell. Freesat is fine for me as I never had an aerial but had a satellite already in place.
Went for a refurbished HDR-1010S 1TB from humax direct and it's like a brand new unit, remote etc.

We've freesat.
There was dish on the side of the house when we moved in, so I bought a compatible TV, you just plug the satellite cable directly into the TV and scan for channels, works very nicely.
Old dish, nothing special, had been there years, will hopefully do years more, saved me spending money on an aerial for freeview.

Thanks for that,Il check Humax and see if they have any refurbs,I remember buying a refurbed Blu-ray player back in the day (when they were super new and expensive) and it was like brand new. ;)

See now we would need to put up a dish,But looking at those Freesat HD boxes + dish theyre pretty expensive if you want ones that record,But then again its a one off fee..thats why i wanted to do away with VM TV was the subscription.

Not sure what im going to do with the upstairs TV though,Might just get a Youview box for that,Does the Youview box need an Ariel or can it run solely on the Ethernet?

If you have to get a satellite you may be better off with freeview, does your tv already have freeview? I looked a few weeks ago and a new satellite would cost about £100 to install

I can get a Satellite with the install kit & tester good reviews for £39 and put it up myself...that £100 is because of having it installed i think.

The TV downstairs is a bit old and has standard Freeview built in,The TV upstairs has Freeview HD but i have no Ariel currently connected,Id have to put a lead from the loft down.

Thats why i was thinking of having Freesat downstairs
Youview upstairs. (Youview box for recording)

I use a humax youview box. Its great. Much easier to use than the virgin box.

Can be picked up pretty cheaply 2nd hand

Well ive been pricing the Freesat boxes up,The recievers you can get cheap £49 ish if you look around,BUT..if you want one that records with a 500GB hard drive its like £150+

WHY!!! never known a 500GB hard drive to cost £100.

Then there is the addition of the Satellite dish so thats another £40

Anyone know where you can get a Freesat HD box with a 500GB hard drive at a decent price?

My VU+ cost £350 but it is the dogs and I run an image called OpenVIX.
My dish is also motorised.
