i just ordered the Samsung 27D850D (was hard to resist the sale), I was initially considering the swift but just couldn't justify the cost premium and the fact it's a TN for that price.

This got me thinking, what are the future modding prospects for buying free sync or gsync modules and installing them? I know nvidia were doing it for an asus monitor but what was so special about it, do most monitors not follow some standard (vesa) and should support both boards?

It doesn't seem like the monitor was specially built for gsync, check out this video by nvidia http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/g-sync/diy

The 'DIY' G-SYNC board is specifically designed to fit into the VG248QE housing and work with that specific panel. You can't just put it in any monitor housing as the ports and connectors are found at different places. or hope that it will work correctly with any panel. The S27D850T is not going to be compatible with G-SYNC (no Samsung models will - they don't support Nvidia-specific tech) nor will it be Adaptive-Sync capable. But Samsung may release a 'FreeSync' version in the future.
