Freesync mad 71hz issue

Got a mad issue here. I'm using a 165Hz monitor and have just built a new PC with a 5700 XT.

Running a game (I've tried 3), the refresh rate of the monitor will randomly drop to 71Hz. I know this as it feels laggy and so I enabled the monitor's built in OSD. It's always exactly 71Hz, no matter what the actual FPS is. It's also completely random, it could be all smooth for 5 minutes or it could happen straightaway.

The strange thing is that both the game and the Radeon overlay think it's still rendering at a high FPS (in this case 150 FPS). The charts and frametimes are all normal.

When I quit the game, it will maintain this 71Hz on the Windows desktop for up to a minute before reverting back to 165Hz.

Sometimes the issue is resolved in game by adjusting the volume. This shows the Windows 10 volume overlay and when this fades out the refresh rate is back to 165Hz for a brief period. The game feels super smooth again.

This is a fresh install of Windows. I've tried changing every setting I can find in Radeon settings. Nothing makes any difference apart from disabling Freesync, however this is the only reason I bought this monitor in the first place.

Any ideas as I'm all out!

Are you on the latest driver? That has a fix for a similar issue I think.
Try disabling the in game overlay to see if that helps.
Does it only start happening after you alt tab?

Are you using HDMI or display port? Just you mentioned volume fixes it. If say it's more than likely cable related as well.

This is what I had todo to get my monitor working with free sync . Enable freesync on the monitor. Install monitor driver. The standard windows driver was not good enough. Enable free sync in the AMD drivers. Check the refresh in advanced display as for some reason windows update randomly changes my refresh rate back to 60hz.

Thanks all.

I'm on 20.8.2, I know 20.8.3 has just been released but I can't see anything related in the release notes.

Disabling the overlay does not help.

Alt+tab doesn't cause the issue, but sometimes fixes it for a few minutes.

I'm using displayport but I don't know if it can be the cable as it maintains 165hz no problem when freesync is disabled. I do have a spare cable I could dig out, but I don't recall having such issues on my old PC (with the same monitor).

With the volume control, it's not the changing of the volume that sorts it but rather the overlay which appears when you do (e.g. from Spotify). Skipping tracks or muting has the same effect.

I do have the monitor driver installed and is set to 165hz in the advanced display settings.

Freesync dropping to 71hz randomly is strange enough, but it seems to lose sync completely as the game apparently still renders at 150+ fps. So it's like Freesync becomes disabled but the refresh rate gets fixed to 71.

I tried a selection of games, some had the issue and some didn't. My most played game had the issue the worst (Trackmania Canyon).

However, I have now enabled v-sync in those games which had the issue and it seems to be fixed!! I don't know if I'm an idiot and this is something which you are supposed to do with Freesync or not, but it's working!

Thanks for your help all, this is a very helpful community :D

I think you are sposed to run vsync when using freesync
While it certainly makes sense to use vsync with Freesync, to prevent tearing, it should work with vsync off too.

I've not seen that, or perhaps never noticed.
For those games that don't fully utilize full screen optimization when you exit out of the game it goes right back to your native refresh rate. Then there's games like modern warfare and the game to mention which whatever reason it just stops working and when you exit out of the game you get this weird refresh rate. I don't know the solution. Perhaps AMD can resolve that. Thank you yep yep no no I had tires put on and just want to make sure the lawn it was good

You should be able to just turn the monitor off wait 10 seconds and turn it back on and the refresh rate should return to default.

Could you provide a list of all the games you have problems with please?
