Does Freesync have to be turned on in game?

I have a Vega 64 and FS monitor. I have enabled FS in radeon settings and on my monitor (AD27Q).

On AC: Odyssey, I set V-Sync to off. However, I was still getting tearing in game, despite running at a solid 55-60fps. When I switched it on, the tearing is greatly reduced, but I don't know if I'm using ordinary V-Sync or FS. There actually is no FS option in AC anyway, just v-sync on, off or adaptive. Are there any other settings I should be aware of please?

All i know is generally tho could be game specific for some is turn off vsync ingame and enable freesync in amd drivers panel under display tab. Im not sure but u could enable enhanced vsync to work along side freesync in global options where the game profiles tab is tho not sure about it. Should work. You can test if fs works by dling the pendulum demo maybe.

Maybe also you might do is use amd drivers to force a fps limit so it doesnt go above monitors refresh rate so fs should be working as its in the fs refresh rate range of the monitor. Tho a few fps down from max monitor refresh rate for some reason ppl say to do.
I doubt I have to worry about going above the monies refresh rate. It’s a 144hz.

I think I’ve solved it anyway. I had my monitor set at 60hz in windows for some reason and a 60fps cap in AC. I set the monitor to 144hz in windows, disabled frame capping and switched v-sync off. It appears to have done the trick so far. Doing quick sweep rounds and it’s smooth as butter.
