I have this cheap £24.99 freeview box in the boys room and TBH the quality is crap, I know this may be down to it only being plugged into a top set booster ariel but even when Its got the best reception with booster turned up full and sitting on the window ledge its still a bit blocky in places. Im getting a new samsung hd downstairs(not freeview model) and would like freeview on this set so my question is: would a dearer freeview box mean better quality, and has anyone found a tv top set ariel that gives a decent reception? If not i suppose ill have to get the ladders out and fit one on the house :( other option I have is a freeview card for the pc which it will be next to but then Ill still have the ariel problem and loose a pci slot

hi there - I recently bought a £60 philips digibox ( no pvr functionality at all) and this was awful, it kept on losing sound and also picture / sound freezing with no reaction to pressing of r/c buttons ( with roof ariel)

I replaced this with a £40 sagem model which is much better quality - admittedly the menu system is a little less glossy and harder to get along with, and remote control is worse - but the actual picture and sound quality is fabulous

dont have model numbers of each as i am at work but if yur interested i will post back these later today if you wish for comparison

tbh I have never seen a table top ariel thats much good - and with a HD set I think you will notice the bad quality even more - depending on screen size and quality of HD tv you get

There are some good cheap boxes out there.Try the Matsui DTR3 for just £27.99.This box is really good for the money and it's response is really quick.

Yea, those are the boxes I use when doing installations for customers. You can get them under several brands too. I think it's the same as Goodmans GDB2 and Digilogic "supermarket" box.

The software on them is actually made in the mighty city of Bristol!

yeah, got to agree with tesla. I sorted some relatives out with a panny tx32pd50 crt tv (pretty decent crt, has a fair few awards) yet they fed it with an elcheapo richer sounds £30 dvd player over a crud scart lead and a crap analogue terrestrial signal.

Your picture quality is only ever as good as the source.

As for the boxes, here in cardiff i'm using a panny tuct30 on one of my tvs with a half decent internal aerial (was about £20 from the big book place on the high street) on the mendip hills tx. Works fine for all muxes (although I live at the top of a hill and have pretty much no obstruction for a couple of hundred metres).

Plus the wenvoe tx has all the crap welsh channels on it that I don't want :P
LOL! That is correct.

Same scenario as me then I cannot get onto the local transmitter due to obstructions so take off of Mendip.
