I want to image my system partition to an external HDD connected with USB. I want to be able to boot off either that HDD, a floppy or a CD and restore the partition.

In short, I want something that does what Ghost does, but which is free.

Does anyone here have any recommendations?

Any Linux LiveCD should let you do this. You'd use the dd command to do a sector-by-sector copy of the data on one drive onto another. You'd then be able to boot from that drive if your motherboard supports booting from USB.

It's not the most elegant solution but it's free and highly flexible.

Looks like a good solution, but I have had 6 hours sleep in 2 days and I am in no fit state to do anything new. I shall look into it tomorrow. Thanks for the information.
