Freezer 7 pro problem

I have just finished putting together my new computer.

I started it up for the first time, before installing OS, and went into the bios.

According to the Hardware Monitor my cpu temperature is 55 degC and the MB temperature is 40 degC. These seem very high for a E600 conroe with a Freezer 7 Pro cooler. I have a Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard btw.

I did notice notice while putting it together that the Freezer Pro 7 wasn't as rock-hard sturdy as it could be mounted on the cpu. It seems to be part of the design or maybe i have a dud.

I also removed the pre-applied thermal paste on it. I applied instead a thin layer of 'Geil copper thermal compound' on the back of the cpu. It's supposed to be good stuff. It came recommended from a friend.

So could anyone help me out with this? Are those temperatures normal? They seem very high for a conroe with after-market cooler. Has anyone else had any problem with the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro?

Try reseating the freezer, you've made a mistake tho with removing the standard stuff, its supposed to be just as good as arctic silver 5, it had also the perfect ammount of thermal stuff applied.
The freezer isnt the tight on my pc either, but it cools well, 38C idle 55 ish when stressed, and thats on a pentium @ 4.1 ghz (wich produces a lot more heat as a core2duo.)

Make sure firstly you've applied enough thermal compound. I would have left the Freezer & paste on personally as its just as good as anything you buy.

Check that the voltages in your Bios are'nt set to stupidly high default levels as that could affect your temp as well.

I applied a pea size in the middle and spread it around with my finger wrapped in a very thin plastic bag. Is that enough?

Also what would be high voltages?

I made the mistake of not attaching the cooler properly and one one side was securely attached. Since reseating the cooler my current temps are 36c CPU and 34c M/Board, rather than the high 50s.

Worth just checking that all 4 points are secured.

Pea sized? Maybe a bit too much? A grain of rice size is the established wisdom...

But, before you panic, there are issues with some of these Asus boards and the reporting of temps.

Check the temps with Coretemp or TAT as well to see if they are differing.

Googling should find you either of those programs.
