i've just got one of these coolers for my amd 3800x2 but one thing has stumped me.

the copper base of the cooler doesn't completely cover the cpu's ihs, it covers it from top to bottom but its about a mil or 2 short either side.

this is the one component in my pc i've never messed with so it this normal.
 
one more question.

what the best way of applying as5?

1. ive been told to apply it both hsf and cpu.

2. hsf and not the cpu and vice versa.

3. just a small dollop in the middle of the cpu and then sprend it out with a bag tightly pulled over my finger.

4. a small dollop in the middle of the cpu and then just mount the hsf and the pressure will spread it evenly.

3 or 4. Generally I go with 4, and wiggle the HSF around a bit to spread it out, not too much though.

Option 1 is a bad idea: putting TIM on both surfaces can create air bubbles between the two. Air is a bad thermal conductor and will reduce the effectiveness of the HSF.

sorted, was abit of a pain fitting ths hsf(fat hands small space) till i took my psu out then i thought i'd break the mobo. anyway.

is it normal for the core's to have around 3 to 7 degrees difference?

it wont damage the cpu?
 
The difference shouldn't be much more than 5C. 7C is a tad high. The highest I've seen on my 4400+ X2 is 4C difference, they usually are the same or 1C apart.

Currently sitting at 31C on each core.

But no, it won't damage the CPU as long as neither core gets too hot.
 
The dies are in the centre under the IHS, so wont matter if cooler dont cover all edges of IHS, infact the AS5 guide tells you only to put TIM on centre area, I still spread it, as to the 2 surfaces with TIM, I agree its bad but Thermalright tell you to do that in interactive video for that new cooler thats due soon. lol.
 
use a crcd

I put a small dollop in the middle then spread it out using a small thermaltake plastic crcd-like card. It makes a nice smooth layer over the surface...

Yeh that difference shouldn't be too much of a worry really :) My C1 is hotter than C0 on load (by about 3-4C), but the same temps on idle.
