My son has a Gigabyte GA-z68AP-D3 board with a i3 3220 cooled by a freezer pro rev2. Now he wants to play Fallout4 when it comes out but his CPU is below the minimum specs for the game and he is panicking about it.

So the question is, if I get him a i5 2500k which will fit straight in, is the freezer pro rev2 going to be good enough to keep it under control with a mild 4GHz ish clock, or is one of the newer £20 coolers going to be that much better?

I think those Freezer coolers are underrated. I'm not saying they are top quality but I bought one for £12 years ago and had a Core2Quad 9550(?) 2.66 running at 3.4Ghz (with several clicks of extra voltage!) idling about 38-40 and only going into middle 50's when gaming and high 50's when running Cinebench etc.

You might get 4.0 on an i5 2500k with no extra voltage at all, in which case I'd say that cooler will be fine. Even with a couple of extra clicks of voltage I think it would be fine.

Of course you need to factor in the size and airflow of your case and how warm it is around the computer. I never have the radiator on near the computer even in the dead of winter, you have to get your priorities straight.

Either way, you've not much to lose by trying it since you already own one anyway..

Yup I reckon it will be ok and as you say seeing as I have it already it cannot hurt to try it.

Actually my gf has just pointed out that Freezer Pro is still in current service on her 8-core AMD FX8350!

Not the lowest powered cpu ever there was.

Displays about 10 degrees when idle and about 40 when turbo'd up to 4.2ghz...

Just to update, i5 2500k is now running @4.4 1.35v max prime 95 temp 75°, he couldn't be happier.
