Hey all,

Just upgraded to an X2 4200 from a 3700 yesterday, and even at stock volts under full load / [email protected] - 220x11, the temp is hitting 52c on the 2nd core ( 45c on the 1st core ). I've had it up to 2.7ghz / 245x11 / 1.425v but it runs too hot for my liking ( 2nd core sits around 60-62c.

So I'm thinking the Freezer64 Pro just isn't up to cooling overclocked X2's and wondering what's the best alternative in the £30 price range ? I've had a look around at Sythe Ninja+, which I've found for £21, but it looks like it will interfere with my motherboards ram slots ( A8N-SLI SE ). Only other one I was considering is the Thermalright Ultra 90 ?

Anyone have other suggestions / recommendations ?

Are you sure you've fitted it the right way around? I wasn't the first and certainly not the last to have put in on backwards! It needs to be fitted so that fan blows the air through the fins & towards to exhaust fan. Failing that, what's the airflow in your case like at the moment? My load temps were usually about 50-55c under full load with the Freezer Pro & I was putting over 1.5v through my x2 3800 at the time.

It's fitted the right way round :) Cooler fan's blowing through the fins towards the 80mm fan at the rear of my case. There's another 2 80mm fans sucking air into the case at the front ( fans rated at 30-34cfm iirc ).

edit - forgot to add that the Freezer's fan is running at full speed constantly, not throttled at all.

I'll try cleaning / re-pasting / reseating the cooler and see what happens.

You could try the Tuniq Tower 120 otherwise, I hear that's pretty good. I still think the Freezer 64 Pro is good but then I have 3x 120mm & 1 80mm fans in my case :)

Some of these chips have been known to have a bad contact between the core and the IHS.
Check out the sticky in the CPU section- S939 A64 IHS Removal.
I lapped my freezer pro and the temps never go over 50 on full load @1.525v

I'm wary of the Tuniq Tower, mainly because if it's size and there's a chance it might block one of the ram slots on my mb, according to a few reviews I've seen.

I couldn't afford to replace the 4200 if I damaged it while removing the IHS, so I'l leave that until I feel a bit richer :) I'll see if reseating the cooler has any effect on the temps tomorrow.

Hi MoodyB,

it can be a tricky choice choosing the right HSF, you read a ton of reviews, you read some posts in the forums, you look at the price.

I recentley upgraded from an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro to a Thermalright Ultra-120 and I am happy with the choice.

The Ultra-90 looks like a good pick also (combined with your choice of 92mm fan).

Just installed a Scythe Mine ( replaced the stock fan with a higher cfm 120mm Arctic Cooling ) which I managed to get for £10 :)

It has dropped the temps by about 3c, but the downside is my 2 core temps are now much further apart@load than they were with the Freezer64 Pro

Freezer@load -

core 1 : 53c
core 2 : 49c

Scythe@load -

core 1 : 50c
core 2 : 40c

At idle on both coolers, there's only a 3c temp difference between cores.

( using CoreTemp for readings )

Yes and the easy way to find out if that is the case; stick whooping great room fan on high setting blowing directly into case and see what the temps like after 5mins. Mine shot down to 28c so conclusive for me that the standard cooler was just rubbish. Replaced and job done, all the £25 and over heavy duty ones seem to do the trick (my spare evo120 was only a tad better even) :)

Odd...i had my 4400 at 2.6~ and that didnt go over 52 after a heavy gaming session using the 64 pro :S...

I do suggest cleaning the bottom and reseating it tho...Got to be something up, that or your chip just want to run hot? Hopefully it isnt the latter tho.

Suppose you could always lap your heatsink as a last resot ;)

Tried reapplying AS5 / reseating the 64Pro without any joy ( the fact that the base was as reflective and smooth as a brick wouldn't have helped either :p )

I've changed from the Freezer64 Pro to a Scythe Mine, and the temps have dropped by 3c so far. A 120mm delta connected to a fan controller should bring that down a few c more, with the expense of some more db :)

Now considering whether to risk using LiquidPro instead of AS5. Read a few reviews and it sounds good, although the biggest temp drops seem to happen with watercooled rigs, not air cooled ones.

The Mine isn't using the stock fan. I replaced that with an Arctic Cooling 12025, which has a higher cfm than the Nexus according to their stats - 56cfm vs 37cfm / 24db vs 22db. I'm not convinced the AC fan does push 56cfm though....

I've my freezer64 pro next to (2cm's apart) a 120mm exhaust fan and the temps are great. IMO more airflow, but a Tuniq Tower is always an excellent option.

Nexus (along with Sharkoon) are one of the few companies that don't get their cfm/db figures from magic fairyland, and as such they don't look so great on paper but they cool really well and have a good rep in the industry.
