Hi guys

I recently built my sister a pc, which has been running fine with no probs, until now, the pc keeps freezing, within windows cant move mouse etc, can't restart, have to hold down power button to force it to restart, when it starts back up everything is fine again, seems to only freeze when left for a while without doing anything.

I think the gfx card is a GTS 250 I think, could it be the gfx card causing the prob

Thanks Hay

Gigabyte GA-X58 UD5
I7 920 D0 Stepping
GTS 250
Patriot 6GB RAM (Can't remember the speed or timings off hand)

Any idea's guys?

if you say it only happens when its left alone for a while the first thing I would do is dissable the automatic power management and screen saver I found that certain machines dont like going into or coming out of standby and this is often the cause of these kind of lock ups.

If this helps and it stops hard locking you can pretty much narrow it down to two things, the motherboards ability to enter and resume from S3 (possible bios update) or video card drivers that are failing as the machine tries to enter standby.

The other thing that I would also check is voltage to the ram. hopefully this should give you a place to start. :)

as above, if its not a power thing its likely to be ram, run memtest or something or it after checking volts/timings are set correctly.

Screensaver & Sleep mode are already disabled, Always just turn the monitor off if left.

So you guys think its a RAM issue, Not a Gfx issue?

If the 2d clock/memory speed is too low on my pc i get that problem along with pink artifacts. As soon as i change it its fine no problems, i figured this problem out as when i was in prgrams it never crashed. As it went to 3d application speed it was no longer on 2d.

It does it when just idling on the desktop... if she is using it, it doesn't happen

Screensaver etc are all disabled.

id run malware bytes and a good anti virus etc and watch temps see if thats the problem first
