Trying to enjoy Cities: Skylines, but my PC keeps freezing after an hour or so of playing.

Today I have had 2 freezes. Both times I noticed using Coretemp that 3 of my 4 cores had gone above 80C. I know my CPU can handle those temps so a bit baffled. I have an Antec Kuhler 620 and have reseated it properly a few times using Arctic cooling MX-2.

Temps at rest on startup are about 40-50C, but after a bit of use, it rises to 55-60C. Once I start gaming it rises steadily to 80-85 and then bang! Goodnight Vienna.

I dont know what to do. I cant imagine my cooler is broke or surely the temps would be up straight at startup. The CPU is 5 years old. Could it be on it's way out?

It may be completely unrelated to overheating, could be driver problem, so start there. I have had problems with audio drivers causing freezes! the temperatures aren't abnormally high (what voltage do you have?) If these temps are higher than usual the pump could be on its way out/blocked etc.

Could you also describe the freeze, is the desktop completely frozen, can you hear any noise from the speakers (buzzing sometimes present with gpu problems)

Well I have had 3 different GPU's, a 670GTX, a 980Ti and a 970 that I bought from a fella on here. It has happened with all of them. Now I used to have my PC speakers plugged into the motherboard, but now for some reason the motherboard sound has stopped working, so I go from the graphics card to the monitor via DVI and then plug speakers into the monitor. Since I did this, I stopped getting the buzzing. Before, when it was plugged into the mobo, I got a very loud and annoying buzzing from the speakers when it froze.

With regards to my settings, here's my CPU-Z screen

okay, double check if you have any conflicting audio drivers for a start, try and update/re-install all the important drivers and see how it goes. Sounds similar to a situation I was in recently wherein I had realtek drivers playing up/conflicting with my soundblaster drivers

Just ran blend test on Prime95.

Temps shot up withing 5 mins to 95-97 on all cores. froze within a few seconds.

I have a feeling the CPU is getting on and just can't handle an overclock any more :(

Going to go to stock and run it again.

sounds like there is something wrong with the cooler. is it an all in one liquid or a standard air cooler. If it's all in one it could well be pump starting to fail.

At idle, the cpu has very good power management so doesn't need very much cooling. At load is completely different story.

cpu failing would likely just cause crashes but not rising temperatures. I had a very similar experiences when a cpu cooler became loose and also when when it wasn't mounted properly.

Definitely worth looking into before writing off the cpu.

Hi guys. Have been playing Cities: Skyline all day at stock without a problem. Temps still quite high for stock at around 60-70, but no freezing at all, so I'm leaning towards a cooler problem. The cooler is as old as the CPU (5 years) so it's probably just run it's course. I dont know whether to go for another AIO or stick to a good air cooler that doesn't have anything to really go wrong.

A 5-year old AIO is doing well. Depending on the tubing/coolant, it slowly leaches out although it's much more likely that your pump's borked.

Big air coolers are just as good as AIOs, it depends what you want.

What case do you have, when was the last time you cleaned the cooler and pc ?

I have the Corsair Obsidian 650D. PC and cooler were cleaned about 2 months ago. Cooler was reseated with fresh paste at the same time.

I just want a reasonably priced cooler that will allow me to push the 2500k to 4.2/4/4.

When did the temp problem start? did it happen before you reseated the cooler? Maybe a good idea anyway to try another reseat, completely remove thermal paste and start again.

For a good air cooler, the noctua's are very good quality, and very quiet. although a little expensive.

Problems been happening for a while. I cleaned and reseated the cooler because it was happening. However, a mere overclock seems to send it nuclear and that can only be the cooler.

Had the alphenon and it was awesome got my 3570k @ 4.5ghz 65c load and very quiet.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £69.88
(includes shipping: £9.90)

Cheers, ordered the Matterhorn cooler and a triple pack of compressed air. Will fit the cooler tomorrow, give it a right good blast out and see how we go from there. I really hope the CPU's OK as I just can't see the point in upgrading yet.
