I have a computer here, and the problem is that shorlty after loading the windows desktop, it hangs completely. No error messages or BSOD, I can boot into safe mode fine however.

I've exhausted most virus scanners, and spyware detectors I can find and although there was loads of pron related spyware it's been removed now yet it is still freezing.

Any idea's what the problem is? It's not my computer, so I cba just yet to back stuff up and format it, but I will if I absolutely have to. It doesn't seem like something that would happen if it was a windows/software problem though?

I've uninstalled most drivers too, and the same problem occurs & I'm running out of ideas?

Anyone think what might be causing it? It's a Dell prescott system btw.

Thanks

you have checked the temp of cpu?

in safe mode done msconfig and turned off all the programs running at startup?

Only monitored the temp in the BIOS, and its fine. I've also disabled all the startup items, to no avail.

Next? :D

if it runs in safe mode fine then i would look at what is loading at startup,do a selective startup and add things back one at a time till the prob occurs.

It doesn't boot with none of the startup options one, it was new from Dell at Xmas, and SP2 was preinstalled.

I could try memtest, can it be run from a bootable CD though?

yup im sure memtest can be run from a bootable floppy/cd , have you tried upgrading all the drivers in safemode aswell ? graphics/mobo/sound ,if it will boot and run in safe mode but not 'normal' i'd say theres a software conflict somewhere ,this has a load of good tools on it that can be used at boot, inc memtest.

Cheers for the link, I'll have a look

If you use broadband through an ethernet like NTL or Telewest another option is to boot into Safe Mode with Networking, go to Ewido and do a free scan. I have found it to be one of the best spyware scanning programs.
