Is anyone here into French cinema? If so, could you recommend any films that I really should see?

The films I've seen:

Amélie
Boudu Sauvé Des Eaux
De Battre Mon Coeur S'est Arrêté
Caché
Le Temps Qui Reste
Ma Mère
La Pianiste
A Ma Soeur

I wouldn't say I'm into French cinema but I've seen these three films and they are excellent.

37°2 le matin (Betty Blue)
C'est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog)
La Haine

I'm with Tru for La Haine and Man Bites Dog.

Also Belleville Rendez-Vous, which I would imagine you've either already seen or heard of anyway, but it's a top film

I would also reccommend you watch the TV series Spiral on BBC4 on sundays at 9 - it's a detective series in a similar vein to CSI, and the first episode last sunday was very good

Thanks, Tru, Penski and j00ni :) Will definitely have a look into all of them. And thanks for the heads up about Spiral on BBC4! We've just got hold of an old freeview box so I'll be looking out for that on Sunday, providing my housemates aren't hogging it for Big Brother

Further suggestions welcome :)

Aye Belleville Rendez-Vous was great, 'The Old Lady and the Pigeons' is a short film by the same director, it's messed up but enjoyable.

Showing a distinct lack of culture and class here but Taxi and Taxi 2 are about the only French films I can recall seeing recently, great fun but hardly intellectual in any way. I'd still recommend them wholeheartedly, if anyone can watch them without enjoying them I'd be surprised.

That's why I own the TV, freeview box and DVD player, and paid for the TV license - so I never have to suffer i'm a big celebrity brother get me out of here love island or whatever :D

I've watched a fair few as my gf did a module on french culture/literature at uni.

One of them that sticks in my mind is l'auberge espanol, good comedy.

Seconded La Haine is fantastic - quite topical in light of the riots in Paris too. I watched a few nights ago "irreversible". Its with monica bellucci and vincent cassell, some incredibly graphic and disturbing scenes, however the film has really stuck with me, give it ago.

(edit: Seconded too!) Just had a thought, L'Auberge Espagnole is a fantastic film, its part spanish/french/english. The Audrey Tatou is in this film too, really funny - watch this!!

Man Bites Dog is Belgian surely?

I'd agree with a few of the above, plus add Cyrano de Bergerac - the film Gerard Depardaeu was born to play.

I won't suggest the usual "Taxi 1/2/3" because I'm assuming you've already seen that :)

La Grande Vadrouille - absolutely hilarious light hearted war film where a british bomber crew get shot down over Paris and ask some Frenchmen to help them out.

Le Corniaud.
Le Professionel.
L'emmerdeur.
Le diner de cons.
La vérité si je mens. (both films)

These are just a few films I've watched over time with my dad. I've also only listed light-hearted films. Maybe not comedies, but definitely funny to watch :D Don't hesitate to ask for more if you wish, or of a different style, I can easily ask my dad if I forget titles :)
