French Doors - Open all the way?

Hey,

Hopefully a simple question for one of you smart bunch to answer!

I've moved in to a new build property and one thing that bugs me is that the french doors only open so far.

1. Why are they restricted? In case it swings back and damages the other panels?

2. Can I remove the metal strip which seems to be the only restriction?

Perfect - thanks all.

They seem quite heavy and stiff so any potential wind damage is unlikely! I'll take a look at those on eBay as a replacement just in case.
