hi all,
so im trying to update my laptop with windows 10, it currently has windows 7 pro (legit copy).

I will install a new 500gb SSD as I wanted a fresh install, but had a few questions first:-
1- do I need to install the new SSD in windows 7 prior to removing the old HDD then installing windows 10 fresh?

2- I was going to download windows 10 from the net so I can upgrade my current windows 7 pro free of charge, but seeing this will be a fresh install on a new SSD, is there a way to get round the licencing part im only assuming that the licence part will be stored in the HDD I will be removing?

3- one assumed I need to download windows 10 and burn it to a CD? or use a USB?

any suggestions are welcome.

I've just done exactly this for my mum, who's machine was dying a death. New SSD to replace a dying mechanical drive, fresh install of Win 10 1909 validated with the Win 7 licence on the bottom of the machine, and job done. Very painless.

Edit: used the win 10 media creation tool, and stuck the ISO onto a USB pen drive, FYI

@Dave Burton thanks for that, about to start theprocess of changing the old HDD to the SSD. i have a small issue though, is that my win 7 pro was an enterprise licence, so i bought a win 10 licence from fleabay...will give it a go

ISO mounted on DVD, new SSD in laptop, ethernet cable in laptop, CD set as priotity 1 for boot.
now telling me reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key!

any help?

so--- ive removed the dvd and done an USB instead.....worked for a second, but stuck at win 10 logo, black background and white logo for 10 mins now....is this normal? thanks
