Fresh install, apple newbie

So.. step sister has just handed me a older style Mac Book Pro which she's bought from a friend and wants me to clear it up and give it a fresh start.

I'm totally new when it comes to apple software so where do I start?

I highly doubt she's got the OS CD or anything like that, she even forgot to give me the charger

I've not been able to have a good browse round it yet as it only had 10% battery so trying to plan ahead.

If you want to blat it and start from scratch then you need an OS CD/DVD.

Right well that narrows that down, at least I know that's the only way to do it.
