Fresh Install or upgrade to W7?

My C2D rig running at around 2.6Ghz has become sluggish over time with a boot up time now which takes longer than it does to boil a full kettle...

Would a fresh install make a huge difference? Or would it be easier (although minimum £70 ish) to bite the bullet and go for Windows 7.

I know I had all sorts of issues with XP needind a fresh install frequently, but this Vista install is only about 18 months old.

Is this normal or is the hardware possibly causing issues?

It entirely depends on how you have looked after your OS. It just might be full of crap that you need to go clean out. Use CCleaner, run some scans with Malwarebytes and whatnot and see if you can clean some stuff up. Remove software you do not use etc.

Of course, the "quick" way of doing all that is to reinstall Windows - but that comes with the price of reinstalling all your applications etc.

Personally, if I was already considering a reinstall and had £70 quid spare, I would go for Windows 7. That's just me though - I am in now way encouraging you to spend £70 on a "fix" for your current slow OS...

..... doo eeeeet! :p

I did the same, but then I was also prompted by lack of storage space and a new hd. I tht that was the best time to go to Win 7. In any case, doing a fresh re-install of your OS on a newly formatted HD is desirable from time to time to clean out all the crap that no matter what utilities you use tend to accumulate other time. Backup your old drive first, then you still have access to important files etc. on your new installation.

I also had problems getting my 4gb ram noticed in Win XP pro (and yes I know about graphics card memory, limits of 3.25gb ram in XP etc) In fact I couldn't get more than 2gb noticed other than in BIOS.

I'm mostly impressed with Windows 7 (64bit) and now I have a speedy OS and access to my full 4gb.

Haha.

It is very tempting to a shiny new OS :)

I have ccleaner and use sybot reguarly. Also use defraggler once every few weeks.

£70 quid may be the issue at present. The girlfriend is 'between jobs' at present so need to conserve a bit of cash. Guess I could always send her out on the street corner... ;)

Guess it's going to be a reinstall for now. Would I really notice a lot of difference between Vista and W7?

You will definitely notice the new GUI, and for me it makes many tasks so much easier for me. I hate it when I have to use my XP laptop for work :(

Performance-wise, that depends entirely on your hardware. On lower-end hardware you should notice W7 is snappier, as MS made it run better on slower hardware. Windows 7 is very much a better OS than Vista, though Vista really isn't as terrible as a lot of people like to make out.

If you haven't the money then no worries. Just reinstall Vista and save those pennies! 7 isn't going anywhere :)

I was reinstalling Vista every 6 months tbh and it still felt sluggish. Next time you do a fresh install make it a Windows 7 one and you'll be glad you did it :)

Think I'll have to go for a reinstall for the time being. Ideally I'd like to move away from the desktop due to space issues and get a laptop. Seems a bit daft buying W7 now and then getting a lappy in (hopefully) a few months with it already installed.

Windows 7 will have to wait for now.

Thanks guys.
