I am currently running an old SATA 1 WD Raptor 150gb as my primary and an old SATA 1 500gb Hiatchi for all my steam games and music. These were part of my old rig and I didn't have the cash at the time to upgrade them along with everything else. Anyways ive ordered a Kingston 120GB SSD V300 for my primary and a Seagate Barracuda 1TB for all my games, both SATA 3 of course.

Now my question is I currently have Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit which is great. But should I upgrade to Windows 8? I mainly game and use my rig for music. Any advantage or disadvantage to windows 8?

Also im guessing I will see a big impovment with the upgrade to SSD and SATA 3 drives?

Windows 8 adds a few things, most are good but some are subjective (The Start Screen). However if you have a Windows 7 license already, it's not worth spending the money on Windows 8.

Personally I would upgrade to 8.

8.1 seems pretty solid now (just as good as 7), especially for gaming. Internet sentiment suggests BF4 seems to perform considerably better than it does on 7 - which may or may not be important for you.

Also, I managed to sell my Windows 7 Pro retail for (once all fees deducted) the same price as it cost for me to get Windows 8 oem.

7 is fine and while I somewhat agree there may be some performance gains running 8, pound for pound the money would most likely be better put towards a new graphics card.

I have been on 8 since it was released and have recently upgraded to 8.1 but if I was to format and reinstall I would go back to 7. Not that 8 is bad or anything but it's just a personal preference.

I agree with theheyes put the money towards a new graphics card e.t.c.

Just make sure before you upgrade that all the programs you use are compatable, the upgrade advisor should see to that but if you have project stuff then best to thoroughly check item by item.
I don't regret upgrading to 8 8.1 is even better though :)

Gaming wise I think you are better of with Win8/8.1 basically with DX11.2 coming and new gen of cards having DX11.2 support.

Win7 will not be getting DX11.2,also BF4 seems to have some nice speed increases due to better DX optimisation with Win8.1 etc http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2351574 ,better security as well with 8/8.1.

Big question is are all these benefits worth the upgrade for you, only you can answer that,in my case I thought it was a worthwhile upgrade and have not looked back.

Moved to Win 8.1, installed StartIsBack and feels like a faster version of Win 7 which is a good result for me.

This is my plan for my next machine build. I like the fact that Windows is these days getting faster with new versions. For so many years it was the other way around...

Yeah, startup and shutdown are both mere seconds and overall responsiveness feels good. I have had a few BSODs from driver issues but putting that down to hardware vendors rather than MS even if it can be a bit frustrating.
