Fresh start - first time - doing it right?

So I have an old laptop that was replaced a while ago and currently isn't being used, and I want to make use of it.

So the plan is to completely wipe it of absolutely everything, and then install Ubuntu as the OS and then just have it as an extra laptop for recreational use.

After a little research, this is what I have come up with:
1. Run DBAN (Dariks Boot And Nuke) to clear everything off.
2. Have Ubuntu on a DVD-ROM, which I will then insert, boot from it and then install the OS.
3. Have a functional laptop :)

Will this work? Or am I missing something/doug something wrong?

Some of the things that slightly worry me:
When I start it up for the first time after wiping it, what am i going to be presented with? Will it just start up and give me an option to install straight away?
With it being a laptop rather than a desktop, are there specific programs etc that need to be on there for it to work?
In terms of installing drivers, will i have internet access straight away to download them? Or will i need to download them from another pc and then transfer them?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Chivs.
