Fresh W7 Pro 64BIT install problems

I have just installed Windows 7 PRO and I am getting problems with some programs not registering in my start menus.

I installed Visual Studio 2008 and SQL server and both programs failed to register in start menu.

Going to program folder location and start program is fine.

Should I just reinstall windows? Never had this problem before and installed plenty of machines.
 
At the risk of sounding patronising but are you making sure you're choosing to add Start Menu items and shortcuts?
