Fresh Window Install ? But Same Settings & Progs ?

Hey guys,

a while ago i installed W7 over the top of Vista you know upgraded it.

Now i keep getting random lock ups, this has only started after i had to repair the windows last week cos a boot file got mashed.

I wanna do a fresh install of windows but obviously i don't wanna have to re-install all my drivers games, programs and stuff again ?

How can i do it ?

Create an image using the windows CD or something ?

A fresh install means you WILL have to re-install all of your stuff. That's what a fresh install means. Just get on with it.

Judging by the fact you have to ask, I doubt you'd be able to do it anyway.

You would need to find/backup various registry keys for applications / installers / user profiles, all your program files, your user directories etc...

It's really not worth the effort. Do a fresh install and re-install applications /games. If your games are steam you can simply backup the folder without worry and run steam once reinstalled.

Corrupted boot files and random lock ups suggest to me it might be worthwhile checking your memory and disk.

Run memtest to check your RAM for faults and let it do at leadt 8-9 pass's
so that you know the memory is ok.

With regards to checking the disk you can get some programmes to check
the health of your disk and things like that. You could run a scandisk on it
but i doubt that will tell you much appart from is you have a load of bad
sectors on the disk.

okay thanks if i want to back my documents wht folders should i copy ? could i just copy c:/Users folder ?

Then when i done the fresh install copy it back ?
