The one on the right is a 1934 Ford, chopped roof, 4.2 litre Rover V8 with 5 speed manual box. It's an animal and drives as good as it looks! Damn shame Dad had to go and get a garage, my drive looked great!

Yup, normally not much original left on them at all except for the body. There are lots of tech articles and Uk meets at www.uk-hotrods.co.uk and there's a hotrod only forum at www.nsra.org.uk which is the governing body for hotrods over here.

Easy things to do to Pops are drop in a 2 litre and 5 speed from a Sierra or a 1600 crossflow and convert the brakes to Escort RS2000. Most of this early Ford stuff is identical in fitment or very few mods needed to make it fit if you choose your parts carefully. Even the Zetec shares the same bolt pattern as the old Anglia engine and bolts up to the same gearboxes.
 
Just buy a 150 amp MIG welder and get some practice on an old junk hatchback. It's easy when you get the hang of it.

Well most of the owners have beards usually lol

All the cars have different types of running gear depending on the style of the car.

The high tech looking ones with the big billet aluminium wheels wil be running 18" wheels, 20's on some of the bigger ones. Usually 8 to 10" wide with 275 width rubber. Rears are always wider than the fronts! The engines are practically always V8's, you can buy complete running engines out in the States so generally they are 5 to 6 litre and come in various power outputs from 350hp up about 700hp or more for the more wild ones. Let me assure you they can all shred their tyres in a matter or minutes! Suspension kits come using geometry from Mustangs and Corvettes, basically cloned from newer well handling vehicles so you have a completely modern chassis with the classic body plonked on top.

On the more classic looking ones the owners try to make the car as period looking as possible and use speed equipment from the era that the car was first built in. This will mean solid axles, leaf springs, steel wheels with wide crossplies and drum brakes. Engine technology has come a long way so they tend to use the same engines as above, but dress them up with more vintage looking parts.

And then there's the ratrod scene. Go find a body out in the desert, chop channel and slice it. Don't paint it and go abuse the hell out of it. This was how hotrods were in the late 30's when their owners couldn't afford stuff like paint, but it's very popular at the moment. Ironically the owners sometimes spend a fortune sourcing the 'right' rusty parts. Ratrods are damn cool though, no denying.

Don't worry about insurance, we have a few specialist insurance schemes and it is very reasonable. My Anglia is about £150 TPFT, I'm 27 and it's in London. The main problem is the SVA test which might make it very hard to modify an old car to this extent, but the NSRA (National Street Rod Association) and a handful of individuals are working with the DVLA for a 'period-style modified' tax class.
 
Ah well, keep an eye out at Extreme Wheels, the one on the right...

I dunno, some of my customers still use 56K and that little lot would take at least 5 minutes to download :D

Scarfacé it would take a big wedge of cash to build one to that standard from scratch (dad still winces when you mention £££ lol) but the resale value is low so you can pick up cars that have been built for 10 years for £10K, put some personal touches and improvements on and have a top rod. Edit: it's a 1934 Ford 3 window coupe (and you say coupe like coop)

Nitro it's been around for 5 years now and we drive it all over the place between us, you probably have seen it somewhere. For a lot of people it's the only hotrod they ever see driving about regularly which is a shame :( What's the point in piling all that money into it and then never driving it?!!
