Hey all, got a second hand fridge off a friend to replace my broken one, but I think I may have broken it!

Its a frost free one with a little black knob inside the fridge compartment which im assuming is the defrost timer thingy? it clicks when turned, and when you turn it so far it goes stiff and makes a really big click, like its cycled round.

Anyhoo, (this is very dodgy i know) the only power point in my rented house that i can use for the fridge/freezer is basically an extension cable with a screw block thing on it, so i isolated the breaker at the fuse box, cut the plug off the fridge power chord, stripped the cable and wired it in.

Fridge powered up and interior light came on, great. So I tidied up the cable and shuffled the fridge into position. (didnt check if it was still working at this point).

Now next morning theres no power to the fridge, the the interior light wont turn on and theres no signs of life, compressor noise etc. so i wired the mains plug back on, and plugged it into a known good extension, still nothing, no noise, no interior light.

So im guessing i must have fried it somehow, any ideas? I read some stuff online that suggests the light should still come on if the defrost timer is broke, but i dont know much about fridge/freezers

You've been playing with your little, black knob too much.

No, genuinely, I'd check to make sure you haven't twisted it too far.

Edit: Read the rest, doesn't sound too good if the light no longer turns on, you're certain the fuse is good in the new plug head?

Is it wired up correctly?

Has a fuse gone?

Has the breaker tripped?

Have you trapped and damaged the cable while pushing the fridge back in?

Tried with a new plughead in a known good mains socket, no joy, tested the 'dodgy' mains connection with a table lamp, works fine.. no breakers tripped, no sign of damage to the fridge power cable..

Is there a fuse on the actual fridge iteslf I wonder.. the issue is deffinatley with the fridge, no signs of life what so ever :-(

I wired the fridge up to a live mains feed initially, (i know i should have flipped the breaker off first) thats why im thinking I might have popped something.

Can you take a photo of the black knob? This sounds like the thermostat.

You may have a internal fuse which may of blown, there should be a wiring diagram in the fridge somewhere.
