I wanted to redo the paste on my graphics card today. So I shut down pc (but never switched off psu) and as I removed the graphics card, I heard a sound from the usb cd drive. I never thought much about it but I did then turn off the psu(too late is the cry)

I reinstalled graphics card after redoing the paste and everything booted fine, but then I came to use the net and it wouldn't work.

So I have spent most of the day trying everything to bring it to life, the orange light is on though, so its getting power, but just no green light.

That will teach me to leave the psu turned on while insid the pc, but I hardly ever switch off the psu when it remove things in all these 20 odd years of having pc's and never shorted anything out before......

So a warning to all, always switch off the psu before taking a pc apart.

Well m8 I suppose it's lesson learned and the penalty wasn't too harsh. I'll certainly turn off in future so thanks!! (I've also been building for circa 25 years and never had this problem).

Don't be too discouraged - it's giod to leave the PSU plugged in but powered down, as then the chassis is still grounded. Poor luck if you can't receive the NIC though :(

As learning experiences go, this could have easily been much, much worse.

You have everything backed up post-shock incase you've shorted the working life on something else in there?

Luckily I backed up about 2 days ago,, so after all the messing around trying to get the lan working, I decided to restore windows after I had installed this new network card. I decided to get one as small as possible because the only pcie slot I had was next to the graphics card and I didnt want to block the gpu fans with it.

Everything seems to be working ok now,,,,, phewww, Im going to always turn off the power to the motherboard in future. Im just lucky the short hasn't buggered anything else up, not that I have come across so far anyway.

I had to redo the gpu paste again, as the temps were not much better then before (gpu 92-94c, room temp 23c running furmark), I thought it may of been because of the new network card right underneath the gpu.

I redid the paste this afternoon and the temps shot down, phewww.... (gpu 85c, room temp 25c running furmark). The lowest temps for this card yet. Im pleased that the network card doesn't seem tobo affecting the temps because that would bug me big time.

Edit: 94c is the max temp before the gpu throttles back.
