agh, so my friend bought a rig from the trading bay, turns out to be an ECS (Elite P4M900 mobo) and Intel Pentium D 925:/

but regardless...

he can just about install windows, but when you go to install an app it always crashes!
application, such as Office, it pulls up errors early on in the installation process, and fails to install

it will also randomly reset on browsing the web, or if you try to run am MPEG it can do the same aso.

we have replaced his, gfx card, memory, hard drive (tried ide and sata) changed cables, changed PSU's, Reseated the HSF, messed about in the BIOS with ram timings and Voltages...

and NO GO. still wont work, however!

i now have the error code for it,

0xc0000005

can anyone help?

A Common Cause Of The 0xC0000005 Error:

The error 0xC0000005 is generated by an illegal "memory access violation". This can be caused by anything from faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software and more commonly under Windows XP Service pack 2, malware/adware installations.

Usually you get this error message when performing a specific task, and if that happens you need to check the corresponding 3rd party's website/support department to see if they are aware of the problem

..a while back Symantec Antivirus caused the 0xC0000005 error with an additional message about a file called SAVRT.SYS . A simple software update to the Symantec Antivirus cured the problem.

A quick google searched turn that up for the error code.

I know you said you have reseated the HSF but have you tried taking the processor out and reseating that?

i have taken the cpu out and reseated it, that was the last chance saloon last night as it was getting late! was hoping it would have been that.

motherboard may not be using the latest bios, its difficult to download, and i wouldnt like to flash it being as unstable as it is.

Is it stable in the BIOS? Or does it crash just in Windows? :)

If you can flash it from DOS, you ought to be fine.

il put it to him, only issue he doesnt have an FDD in the machine.

"seems" stable in Bios, but in truth, o turned off EIST, C1E etc and onboard floppy controller and it actually went into a reset cycle i.e POST reset, POST Reset, until i reset the CMOS!

You can flash off a memory stick. There was a thread on here about that but I can't find it. I'm sure one of the others will be able to tell you how to do that.

O dear.

What I would do is barebone the system and lay everything outside the case and do everything you need to do before putting it back in the case this makes it easier to diagnose problems in most cases.

Aslong as you put it on a flat surface and just watch what your doing you should be ok.

I would but a floppy drive or borrow one or something to flash the bios too.
