My friend is trying to fit a Zalman CNPS9900MAX onto his gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC and is having real difficulties. By the sound of things the screws aren't long enough to get it screwed in because of a black thing that sticks out of the back of the motherboard beneath the CPU (see pic below). Personally I think it should come off but it is kind of hard to tell from pictures and there is nothing in the motherboard manual to suggest it should come off.

Obviously my friend is reluctant to try to take it off in case it is not supposed to be removable, so can anyone confirm if it is supposed to come off or not, and how you are supposed to do so please?

If it is not removable can anyone give any ideas on how the cooler might be fitted?

ps. I wasnt sure if this should be in cooling or motherboards so feel free to move it if neccessary

Picture in spoiler because its quite big

ohh that, you cant remove that, its the cpu retainer the underside of it

cant he buy longer screws? or maybe use a different cooler?

I assume he is using the correct brackets and screws, looking the manual there is different options.

yes, he is using the correct screws and bracket and stuff. turns out he isnt the only one with this problem: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/269213-29-install-zalman-cnps-9900-asus-p8p67

*edit*
just noticed its a different motherboard in that pic but it has the same backplate thing.
also, buying a different cooler is a bit of a pain because his case is like mine and doesnt have much headroom (hence going for the same cooler as me). he doesnt want anything with water in it going anywhere near his PC so this was one of the best coolers on offer that would fit
