Thanks for the reply, that looks like the kinda stuff hes talking about.

If he just wants decent quality output into monitors then he just needs high quality stereo output. I'd be inclined to get an external card so it's isolated from any internal sources of electrical noise. Something like the Echo Audiofire 4 would be very good for this. If he wants lots of inputs to record live then a MOTU 8pre would be more appropriate.
