hi their my friend has given me his computer to try and fix. he has recently brought a 5850 extreme to replace his 4850. he keeps getting random locking up (screen goes black) in games at least 3 times a minute. i rack my brain over what is causing it. i figured it can’t be the drives (as i have the same and it is running fine) i then noticed that he only had a 400w psu (with only 1 pcie 6pin connector the other via a Molex) so the question is could the psu cause lock ups (is it starving the card of power) he is very reluctant to spending £50 on something that isn’t guaranteed to fix the problem.

Can't you try your PSU?

What brand is his PSU? If it's a decent supply it will probably be borderline, but a crap/no name brand will be giving problems for sure.

Hi there,

Do you know what the make and model of the PSU is?

Unless it is a really nice quality one like corsair, enermax, seasonic or antec then I wouldn't suggest keeping a HD 5850 on the PSU (the 5850 is rated at 151W).

tbh i dont want to take mine out cuz the cable mangement is perfect and spent hours.

i believe it to be a very very bad quality generic psu XD he said he got it for £20 2 years ago (surprised it has lasted this long)

While I agree that there's a good possibility it's the PSU, I would still check the drivers, as just because they run fine on your system, doesn't mean that's the case for another's. Just check the various threads every month complaining of whatever in every driver release, despite many systems being fine.

its deffinatally the psu if i unclock the 5850 to 500/800 i have no problems (because the card is using a lot less power) so i have just orded that be quite 530W i hope this sorts it out :D

Yea - this really wasn't a waste of money.

It may not be guaranteed to solve the issue, but the system will soon have a much lower chance of spontaneously catching fire.
