Friend with SKY, how to upgrade router

Hi all,

If someone on Sky broadband (i presume ADSL?) wants to upgrade their supplied wireless router how would they best do it? Do they need to purchase through sky?

Will they need the user and pass name only if their current modem is built into router? If it is separate can they just get a normal router?

So they will need an ADSL2+ (not just adsl?) router and their user/pass should be in their welcome pack or visible on their online one?
What is a good (decent range) model router to get?
