hello there. one of my online friends has a pc that wont boot, it gets power all the fans spin but allso it powers up on its own without pressing the power button.

and theres nothing that comes up on screen and after a few seconds it powers off.

hes using:

Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60GHz (800FSB) - Retail

Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA (Socket 775) PCI-Express/AGP DDR2 Motherboard

GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC5300C4 667MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX21GB5300DC)

Ati 9600 agp card

a ide hdd, dont know what sort

a 250w psu which for a fairly low spec system id of thaught is enough.

any ideas what could be causing this? he knows a fair lot about pcs, he hasnt done anything stupid like not put the spacers between the mobo and the case etc, hes done everything pretty good so i dont know whats doing this

any replys greatfull, thanks :)

(brb dinner, ill be 15 mins)

I just used this PSU calculator, http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

Came to 213w using;

1.6ghz allendale (didnt have the conroe)
High-end desktop mobo
ATI 9600 Pro
2x DDRII modules
1 IDE 7200RPM
1x DVDRW
Sound blaster (all models)
2 USB devices
and added 3x 120mm fans just for the hell of it.

Just incase, tell him to unplug anything non-essential and see if that helps.

hes tryed unplugging everything like fans etc and it still wont have it, any more ideas?

thanks

EDIT: by the way, he allso doesnt get anything on his screen, nothing comes up

Check the HD jumper, make sure it is on Master. If it is on Master then switch it to CS = Cable select & try that.

maybe something is short circuiting or something, and possibly the power supply is dead- id say get a known working or new 300+w preferably 400w or so and a good brand power supply, take the mobo out the case, put it on the bag it came in, then plug the power cables (24 pin and 4 pin) into the mobo and nothing except the monitor/graphics card, keyboard and mouse and see if it works ;) (use a screwdriver or something to short the 2 pins where the power switch goes onto) if it works like that, make sure all the correct spacers and none others are screwed tightly into the motherboard tray then put the motherboard back in and put things like the hard drive back 1 by 1, if none make it stop working then its the psu, if one makes it stop working it was the psu or what made it stop working
