Hi guy's i am currently with Three on a rolling monthly contract for £12.90 and i have been happy with the service except for the fact i cant connect to my cars hands free , or should i say i can but i cant get any sort of signal , its the VW premium unit (rSAP) in my Skoda so it will only connect with a 2g signal .

I get around this atm with my works phone, its on Vodafone , so if i get a call on my personal phone i can call back on the works phone via the hands free , but its getting annoying

Looking around i see the £12 goody bag from Giff Gaff has the same sort of levels that 3 offer,250 minutes unlimited texts and net so i am guessing it should be ok to swap over,

I only use between 1-2 gig of data a month , will this be deemed ok with the fair use policy thing they have ?

Also checking the coverage map most of the places In England and Scotland i go to seam to get a good signal .

So i guess i am asking are Giff Gaff any good and worth the change ?

that's odd cos tethering works faultless for me on giff gaff with no extra software installed and I'm on the 12 quid goody bag.
I currently have my laptop and my little girls nexus 7 tethered to my phone, and it was easy to set up.

Back on topic, I tried 3 for a month and hated the service, for me giff gaff has been far superior in network coverage and internet reliability.

Mick.

Three are usually very good for data, will be even better later this year when anyone with an unlimited data package gets 4g for free!

If you check the T&Cs you will see it is forbidden. Their detection is however very rudimentary at present and basically involves them looking for very high data usage.

Having been on both networks and i wouldnt leave Three for giffgaff, i seem to get faster internet coverage all over the country and just generally seems better coverage on call side too

I generally say as a guide, don't rely on what others say when it comes to data access, as it can vary wildly between different areas. In my case, O2 provides better speeds at home (6Mbit/s down consistently compared to Three's 2-3Mbit/s), and when out and about, provides speeds that are more than fast enough (5-7Mbit/s down). Three can have faster speeds, however I've found it to be more inconsistent.

Best way is to try, to be honest.

EDIT: Just re-read your original post. Changing mobile provider will almost certainly not change your ability to use your car's bluetooth! What phone are you using? You probably need to change phone, not network.

I just left GG. I didn't go to 3, but only because of poor coverage at my parents' house. I found O2's coverage to be very all-or-nothing - it was superb in some areas, non-existent in others and I found myself using my girlfriend's T-Mobile tethering a lot of the time.

It's a good deal if you're heavy on internet and texts, but don't call much or need tethering. I found myself running out of the 300 minutes on the £12 goodybag, and while I don't need tethering, it's handy to have the option. I swapped to T-Mobile on their recent discount for the full monty plan: £16 (£4 more) for unlimited minutes on top of the texts/data was too good a deal, and as a bonus I've gained the ability to tether.

As mentioned, if you find yourself tethering more than once every couple of months AND use more than 1GB data a month, go elsewhere. If you don't need to tether, or you don't use more than 1GB a month, they're pretty unbeatable on price. Personally, I only use tethering a couple of times a year when either I need to troubleshoot when my internet goes down, or I'm doing some work in an airport etc and desperately need to download something: so I doubt they'd notice or care when my maximum usage tethering is probably ~1MB a month.

In short, they're cheap, not the most reliable (I've had more problems with them in 6 months than I had in 3 years with Orange, or 5 with Virgin Mobile), but do the job. They were outstanding when they first appeared with unlimited data for £10, but 3 and T-Mobile have become far more competitive with discounts on their fully unlimited One and Full Monty plans.

Now, who's going to be first with an unlimited calls/texts/data/tethering 4G plan for under £30?

I have a Galaxy S3 it did work fine with the car on my last Vodafone contract. Samsung have put rSAP back in since 4.0.4 so it talks to the car no problem.

I have ordered a sim from Giff Gaff , just to see what sort of speeds i get ,Might have a look at T-Mobile while i am at it .

Thanks for the input guys :)

Ok giffgaff sim arrived , bought my goody bag £12 , tried pairing with the car , still wont connect , tried the other halfs O2 sim , connected , kids Orange sim connected , my voda sim still connects.

So it seams 3 and giffgaff wont :(

Off to look at sim only deals again

T-mobile next then i guess . What a pain

Your sim card will not prevent/allow you to pair your phone with your car! The problem is the combination of handset and car. You need either a new phone, or a new car.

I'm assuming when he says he tried other sims, that he meant in the same phone. If not then it does point to the phone being the issue.
