Diggin up an old thread here - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17933969&highlight=conan

i finally got a new 24" tft and am now sat holding money for a new gfx card

Got about £200 to spend and the same setup ive got in that thread apart from the new 24" tft

Main game is age of conan, sick of getting gfx lag and adding this 24" tft just made things worse lol!

I m8 of mine bought a 280OC2 and id like to be on par of what he has as he says his runs nice and smooth and can even get away with recording aswell.

So which should i go for on age of conan ati or nvidia bearing in mind i have a 520W corsair there site says ill get away with a extreme cpu overclock and a gx285 "if i was to add the extra £30 for the asus one ocuk is selling" and 3 hard drives.

What do u guys think?

Hello fellow Lowestoftian!!!

I am debating a 260GTX and overclocking it to a 285GTX. It's like a £100 cheaper and means I wouldn't have to replace my PSU.

You'd be better with an amazing 260, or any 275.
Just make sure it has more than 512Mb of ram or you will be chugging with FSAA enabled at that res.

GTX 260 or 4890. The 4890 is faster but then the gtx 260 is a few £ cheaper and you have an SLi board.....

I always go with the card that my motherboard can have a second/more of.

if your board is SLI then go for the GTX 260, save a bit more money and SLI them.

Or you could get a decent 275, wait a while until you need the second one to SLI.

Actually i just found something out accidentally. Now I don't know how true this is but I was looking at reviews of 4890s in crossfire and I found this

"HD 4890 CrossFire is available on any AMD or Intel chipset motherboard that has two PCI-Express slots"

I've heard that you need the exact same card if you are to do that, or is that not the case? I've heard that too! I hope not as that makes things trickier!

Nope any other 8800GT will SLI nicely with your current one. You already have an SLI mobo so could be £40 - £50 well spent ;)

just upgraded from 8800gt sli to gtx260 sli and found an improvement but nothing amasing but did let me up the res and pretty bits, what res are you playing at and what's the max res of your monitor? i only have a 20" samsung with max res of 1680x1050 but with the upgrade im playing on my toshiba 1080p tv with all the nice eye candy on without a problem but with the 8800gt set-up it was a little slower and couldn't up everything to max

but it all depends if you have an sli motherboard, if not you might be better with a 285

also adding 2 gtx260's might push your 520w psu to much i had a ocz 600w before the upgrade but being about 18month's old didn't think it would be upto the job of powering my phenom II and 2x gtx260's

anyway hope it helps :)

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I have a similar question. My specs are as follows:

Intel Core2Duo 8400 CPU
Asus 5PK SE motherboard
4GB RAM
nVidia 8800GT 512MB
Vista Ultimate x64
Native resolution 1680x1050

I can run nearly all games in my native resolution and high settings. Mass Effect, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Assassin's Creed all in max settings. The only games where I have any problems are Oblivion in the outside areas, H.A.W.X.'s ambient occlusion and GTA IV (crap game, though). I can't see any need for PhysX. I should also say that the 8800GT was an excellent buy: less than £100 and it handles almost anything I throw at it with no annoying whine or overheating.

My question is 3-fold: will I see an improvement from a graphics upgrade (i.e. will I get good value for money)? I've had my eye on a 260, then thought about a 275, but I'm wondering if I should really just keep my 8800GT for another year.

Secondly, I'm wondering if I should jump ship to ATI. My first 2 graphics cards were ATI (back in 1999/2000) but since then I've always been an nVIDIA fanboy. But ATI's specs aren't really comparable with nVIDIA's, so I'd like some opinions from people who have used both designers in recent years. Additionally, I've heard that nVIDIA forceware drivers don't play well with Vista, and I was wondering if Catalyst drivers do better? I would like to avoid dual-GPU cards, as I don't think I can provide enough cooling.

Thirdly, I was lucky enough to find an 8800GT in the old 8.5" length, so I didn't have to sacrifice an HDD bay to fit it in the case. What are the chances of finding a similar gem in the modern field of graphics cards?
