What to go to next, I would like to keep using as much of the system if possible.

coming from a i5 2500 (non K) CPU @ 3.30GHz Socket 1155
gigabyte Z68AP-D3
16gb ram G.Skill PC3-12800
2x 500gb ssd samsung 850
creative soundcard
amd 290x

to Intel Core i7 i7-4790K CPU?

I dont know the best options really. Its been quite a while since this was built.

Thanks

To go to a 4790K, you will need a new motherboard too as it's a different socket.

Depends how much you're wanting to spend. The route I took was upgrading to an i7-2600k, very cheap to do and overclocked, a very capable CPU. The newest CPU's will give a bit of a performance advantage, but not enough to warrant the cost in my opinion.

I understand that I would have to go with a new motherboard and cpu etc. with the 4790k
Maybe £300-£400 for cpu, motherboard and cooler.

I dont know if the z68ap-d3 I have will do much more than it is now?

Personally I'd get a 2500k/2600k or 2700k and overclock it with a decent cooler. It'll give you 90% of the performance of a full system overhaul without the hassle and cost.

I managed to get a 2700k quite cheap, and its running at 4.3 for now. Just until i have time to try and work out the best voltages and settings etc.

Thanks guys for your help and for saving me some £££
