okay my sis about to move out and that leaves me with the internet bill. so my phone line is still with BT and was thinking to switching to O2 for my phone line and my broad band.

any reasons which i shouldn't?

why does BE offer 24mb and O2 only offers 20mb?

BE being part of O2 i should get the same / better preformance right? ( was on 8mb on BE now going to get 20mb for O2, BE estimates 12mb/s connection on my line.)

o2 connect the same as be, 24mbs at the exchange, o2 give you the speeds that you would download at with overheads etc which would be arround 20mbs, be give the sync speed. both are correct.

@Locky, I'm sure the OP is right. O2 sell 20mb where Be sell 24. Aside from O2 offering pop3 email I don't think there's much difference between the two so you should get the exact same performance no matter who you go with.

[edit] I just reread what you said. Makes sense, and wasn't something I knew before :) Just different advertising methods eh! Naughty Be :p

I moved from BE to o2.it worked out cheaper ,i got cashback on top (50quid) plus 3 months free :)

I also actually got better speeds with o2 because i had a line issue that be* dragged their feet over and it took months for them to acknowledge the problem,so i moved to o2 and they had it fixed within a week, cracking support at o2

highly recommended ! so i went from 3mb with be* unlimited to 7.7mb with o2 standard :)

thanks, btw where did you get ur cash back offer? from o2 or some comparison site?

I did this because quidco was offering £100 cashback at the time on one of their packages (£7.50) + discount.

They were giving me £10.00 to go with them. I got this installed on 3 lines at family premises giving me £300 pound total cashback. :)

12 x £7.50 = £90.00 for a years broadband with free router.

To be strictly accurate, Be, O2 and all other ISPs will never actually give you the download speeds they claim in their thoroughly dishonest advertising - even our Luddite MPs seem to have noticed this.

How is it dishonest? seems pretty reasonable to me

Taken from BE's site

# Up to 8 meg download
# Unlimited usage

*Your actual speed will be affected by factors that are out of our hands, such as your distance from the exchange. Terms apply, and service is subject to location and availability, BT line and minimum term contract. Wireless coverage depends on factors including distance from wireless box and building construction.

The fact is your not going to get the full speed as you will always have overheads and other factors but thats always the case, I used to be on ADSL Max when it first came out and got 7.5mbps. The reason why so many people complain is because they dont read the small print or they simply do not get the "up to" statement.

That being said im happy with my BE connection, syncing at 18mbps and download at around 17.5mbps

Actually, O2 say 20Mbps because the odds of getting more than that are pretty slim. It has nothing to do with overheads.

I told Be I was thinking of changing to O2 and got 2 months free and then a big discount on my subscription after that.

+1. Regarding the OP, I assume neither network is faster than the other. However, I have been with Be for 3 years now over 3 different flat moves and they have been exemplary. To me the £7 or so pounds that I would save is just not worth the risk ...

No, but your throughput will be less than your sync speed because of overheads.

The sync rate is obviously effected by the distance from the exchange, quality of the link and loss of signal and if your using any internal wiring inside or if people are actually using the master socket.

Of course, but all of that is common to both O2 and Be. I was referring to the point that O2 were quoting a speed with overheads already accounted for while Be were not.
