From Bulldog to Be*?

In my nightly insomnia attacks, I was re-checking availability of Be* in my area, and it states it should be online by Jan '07.

I am currently with Bulldog on an 8mb line and get full speed on that, no problems there.

From my line stats below is it worth going to Be* or are the line stats pretty maxed out for anything ADSL2+ related?

Code:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8064 kbps 576 kbps
Line Attenuation 29 db 7.5 db
Noise Margin 10 db 22 db

Also, will I need to go back to BT before I can switch to Be*, or will I just be able to get my MAC and switch over?

I was contemplating going to Bulldogs 16mb service, but judging by their small print the upgrade would incur a £20 fee plus a 12 month contract (currently on a 1 month contract) so it doesnt seem worth it to me.

If you want to go with be* you will have to go back to bt.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17376 kbps 1308 kbps
Line Attenuation 29.0 db 12.2 db
Noise Margin 6.1 db 6.9 db

Those are my stats. Your look fairly similar so i would expect a speed increase.

I say do it :D

Cheers for that :)

Shame about going back to BT, more hassle.

Nice stats, but am i right in that they change dependent on speed etc?

In all honesty I am more interested in upload speed, download i would be happy with 13mb+

You should be able to migrate the ADSL from one to the other, though you'd need to get BT to take on the voice service.

SNR margin will, the attenuation's a function of your line (so should be static). You should get more, but how much more's a "how long's a bit of string" question. The only way to know with even the slightest certainty is try it and see.

Be are activating in my exchange on the 31 of Dec 06 so I think I will make the move to upto 24meg :D whats the max upload I could expect?

I'm half a mile from exchange btw

According to website "Up to 1.3 meg upload speeds"

Edit: I'm on NTL 10meg and get full download, or just over on good server, does that mean I would get good speed on ADSL if I moved? Or does it not work like that? Sorry only ever had cable!

Thanks for the replies guys, will have a look once it gets activated.

TweakinFreak, unfortunately Cable is different to ADSL, You should check on Samknows to see how far you are from your exchange.

I know the site but not sure where to go to check distance from my house sa I don't have a BT number to check against?

Do what I do, find a local shop you know of and grab their number, they are usually BT lines. IE I know a letting agency down the road from me that I use for this type of stuff, checking Be* availability etc.

Ah I found a great site to check your distance from nearest exchange here mine is 1.33km? Not sure how to work that out

I think it's 1300m to the exchange from mine?

Not sure what connection speed that will give me on 'Be'

I would always add in a bit extra mileage to account for the line the phone line takes etc.

Also its down to the quality of the line from the exchange to you, but 1.3km isnt that far really, same as me, and thats my connection speeds (maxed out 8mb line).

Your mileage may vary :)

I know, the download speed I am happy with, its the upload I am really after, not for P2P but uploading pics etc always takes ages, even on 60k. 150k upload would be great.

Well I called Be and the said (after giving them the doctors number round the corner from mine) that the max I would get there is 8.5meg? And my mum's number down the road say 15mins walk is 6meg max!

Are they always conservative in their speed estimations? on the phone?

All told I think I'm 2km from exchange so I may wait and see if any of my mates or people at work get it in my area and see what speeds they get.

Is the upload dependent on distance from the exchange too?
