Well it had lived for many years as a core 2 duo

I spend a couple of hours cleaning out the old power supply and case.
Worked a charm.

wow look at all thAT dead skin/i would be to ashamed to post those pics/it will have us all wondering what the rest of your house looks like if the inside of ur pc is to go by?????

That was a bit harsh. My house is very clean and well maintained, however the inside of the PSU hasn't been high on my 'list of things to do'. It's was 7-8 years old and has never been cleaned out - all the rest of the PC has been cleaned out regularly (and so has my house!) but the PC got neglected over the last 4-6 months because I knew I was going to upgrade it.
The main reason for the post is that I was equally horrified of the amount of crap in there but considering that its been running 24/7 for 7 to 8 years on a significant overclock - I can understand why its bad. I also wanted to exhibit my skills in cleaning and overhauling an aging PC - I wonder if they can make a show called 'how clean is your PC' with Holly Willoughby rather than Kim Woodburn. :)

I had spent around £450 on this upgrade and didn't want to spend anymore this month (xmas is so damned expensive these days) so I reused the components that I already had (including the PSU!) and gave them a good clean. I will be adding more to the system (SSD PSU GPU) in the coming months and the whole thing will be assembled into a new case.

Might want to look at replacing your PSU seems Haswell has some pretty specific requirements PSU wise.

I have checked all the voltages and they are REALLY accurate I have even ran it with the oscilloscope on to see if there are any problems with the output, I can honestly say that after all these years that it is absolutely spot on and with the temp probe in there it's not producing any unexpected heat.
Overall, I'm happy with this first stage and everything is running just great.

Regards
Scotty
