From i7 920 to where?

Feeling an upgrade coming at or just after Christmas. But i'm not entirely sure where to...
Specs at the moment:

i7 920 @ 3.92GHz
9Gb OCZ Gold 1650MHz 8,8,8,24,1T
ASUS P6T Deluxe 206MHz BCLK

Reasons for upgrade:
-- Not being able to break the 4GHz mark has always grated on my OCD tendancies
-- HotHotHot! Processor is a hot one (C0), stays under 85 through IBT though
-- Ichin' for an upgrade

Questions/thoughts:
-- LGA2011 is meant to be the replacement for LGA1366, but the prices are ridiculous and do not give a very good performance/cost ratio.
It will no doubt have IvyBridge-E next year sometime, but when?

-- LGA1155, it's been around a while, will it die? I
vy bridge comes out on it around March/April so could swapout a 2500/2600/2700 for an IvyBridge chip at somepoint. However, no doubt Intel will release another chipset (Z77/Z78 or something) along with IvyBridge.

-- AMD? Yeah right...

So i'm initially thinking of waiting a little longer and see what price the quad core LGA2011 chip comes in at and then make my decision.
What do you think?

Try to hold off on upgrading until after Xmas for IvyBridge, i7 920 is still a very good chip.

I was going to upgrade to SB from AMD Phenom II X4 but I remembered I had a i5 760 CPU lying around and bought a cheap P55 motherboard to last me until IvyBridge.

I'm tempted by the LGA2011 quad core as well, and then upgrading to eight core IB-E in Q4 2012 :E

What do you do? Gaming? Photoshop? encoding?

Gaming - a 2500k would be the only worthwhile upgrade (as long as you overclocked), and cost you maybe around £100-£150 after you sell your old stuff

Encoding - If you do more than 2hrs a day then you might be interested in a 2600k/2700k. Or if you really don't mind spending crazy stacks of money, look into Sandybridge-e.

Option 3? Do nothing. An i7 920 is a good chip, even at sub 4ghz speeds.

I have a i7 950 @ 4.2 ghz, so I'm kinda in the same boat as you, I primarily use my PC for gaming but do occasionally do some media work such as encoding.

I've personally decided to wait till Haswell in 2013. The 950 is still pretty good for gaming and whilst it may not be the fastest encoder, it's still not slow. I figured there's little point in me going LGA2011 because I wouldn't use the platform well enough to warrant it's high cost, and whilst sandy/ivy is appealing, LGA1155 is going out when LGA1150 for Haswell is implemented. Hope that provides an insight to a fellow LGA1366 user!

Gaming and music production.

Thanks all for your responses. I think i'm going to invest in the best air cooler i can, what seems to be the best at the moment?
I'll reconsider closer to March and sell on my old kit an invest in either LGA1155 or LGA2011 depending on the prices of the quad core SB-E.

In the meantime i'll upgrade the heatsink to keep it cooler, and see what i can do to break the 4GHz mark. Also, persuaded my GF that a PS3 is a good idea for the living room (mwahahahahaa).

Best air cooler out there is the Silver Arrow I think, followed closely by the NH-D14.

May be wrong though, but that's what it was recently.

If you can get your i7 to 4ghz, or even higher if you got a good one, then you'll not need to upgrade for a while.
