Hello,

I am on Sky BB at the moment. Its great between midnight and 4pm, when i am at work or in bed :p

However i want to use it between 4pm and midnight, in the evening when i am home. Its terrible !! laggy gaming on PS3/Xbox, carnt watch youtube videos !! speed tests show less that 0.5Mb downlads at 16K :( just unusable.

So basically Sky/BT are slowing my connection right down in the evening to a point where i carnt use it :(

I have found Plusnet and there PlusNet Pro for £19.99 a month, it says All traffic prioritised at all times so its good for gaming and also has a 15Gb month limit.

Anyone use Plusnet ? what do u think ?? could moving to them solve all my problems.

Thanks Ben

I was with Virgin Media 2 years ago and they were rubbish to. I switched to the Plusnet package you are considering and my pings went from over 170 sometimes to as low as 15 -20 on most games all the time.
Downloads can be slowish at peak times but my pings are always good.
Plusnet offer an option to switch off interleaving on your connection to further lower your pings, I did and it made my pings faster with no side effects,
and customer service is spot on as well, and no I do not work for Plusnet. I went from getting booted off servers for too high a ping to having one of the lowest pings on there. SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope this helps

The speed and pings you get are dependant on how good your line is, any idea how far from the exchange is?

Can you post your line stats for us?

Hello,

Thanks for the info :)

Connection Speed 5344 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 29.0 db 16.0 db
Noise Margin 14.4 db 19.0 db

Thats from the router.

How does it look ?

Looks good, do you know what exchange you are on?

There could be better providers offering an unlimited package.

What ever BB you go with will be through the BT wholesale equipment.

With a line of your quality you should be able to recieve good internet through.

I have heard allot about adsl24, many people claiming they are the best non-llu provider.

Someone else might know more.

Adsl24 is on a 1 month contract, so try it and see?

Thanks for the reply.

Sky cancelled, was paying £17 a month for the connect package.

Will get the MAC code in the post, then will sign up for ADSL24. How long does it take to move over once i have the code ?

ADSL24 is £18.90 a month so no difference really.

Just need to buy a wireless router now, any suggestion ??

Will keep the thread updated.

Thanks Ben

The Netgear DG834G seems to be a good router and you can install custom firmware on it.

You can pick them up cheap off the bay, you can get the sky one and open it to all ISPs i think.

nothing to add here except to say oh my god i feel your pain, Ive been playing online games today and soon as half 5 hits all i get are disconnections and lag with sky, its making my blood boil!!

I think its something like a 10day change over period.

You still have sky BB until the change don't you, you havn't completely cancelled the BB...

The women said it runs for 31days from now then it will end and i must use my MAC code before the 31 days are up.

Yeah thats right, your contract with sky will end in 31 days but your BB will switch from sky to ADSL24 about 10 days after suing the mac code.

Just found this:

Right, connected!

This time of day with Sky I would be getting < 1meg.

Had a quick blast on Quake Live and although I'm still pants my ping has dropped from 60-80 (this as after finally persuading Sky to put me on fastpath), to around 30.

So far, so good then :)

Oh, Sumanji, the whole process took about a week and a half.

A guy in the same/similar position to you.

Hello,

Order placed with ADSL 24 for the Home 30 package :) £18.90 a month.

Next Friday it should be activated.

Alittle worried it said my order has been accepted by BT Wholesale  on the e-mail from ADSL24... i really hope its better than Sky !!!

Gonna order the router you suggest now aswell, Netgear DG834G :)

Thanks for all the help.

Yeah, ADSL24 use the BT wholesale equipment because they dont have there own equipment at your exchange.

Get that router and install the DGTeam firmware :)

Make sure you get a router thats listed on there website :)

Hello,

The DG834G is listed on ADSL24 web site so thats cool.

Whats that firmware al about ??

Thanks Ben

Im not too sure as i haven never used it myself but everyone i know who has a DG834G has installed the firmware and said it the best thing that they have done.

Just make sure that the DG834 router has a Broadcom chipset(as you can then alter your SNR to get a higher synch,if using the DGTEAM firmware)
