Hi there,

As the title says I moved house and also internet provider from Sky to Virgin Cable (still waiting to be connected on Sat) so I wonder if I can use my wireless netgear modem/router (using it as a router only plug to the cable modem) to get wireless connectivity at my place without having to buy a cable router?

I read in this forum that some DSL routers (and some netgears) can also work with cable connections, anybody has experience with this?

Thanks in advance,

Lui

Routers that work with cable don't have a modem, so you could connect them to any type of DSL or cable - what you've got is an ADSL router, which has a built in modem.

I know it has a modem, but I guess is possible to use it only as a wireless router for my cable modem?

Model: Netgear 108Mbps super wireless ADSL router (4 ethernet ports)

Part Number DG834GT/DG834GTB

This is my first time with cable and I don't understand why the don't offer a wireless service like most of ISP

Cheers

No it's not possible, the WAN port is an RJ-11 for the built-in ADSL modem, it doesn't have an ethernet WAN port. You can connect your cable modem to one of the 4 LAN ports, but then it'll be acting as a switch, not as a router.

You mean why they don't offer a free wireless router. They've been trialling a Netgear model for ages but haven't gone through with it yet.

Thanks Daegan.

When you say I can use it as a swicth, you mean connecting the 3 PCs through the netgear but using internet in only one pc at a time?

Not always a good thing to get one off your ISP as they can be a pile of rubbish. What ever the ISP can buy in cheap in bulk!

I got my connection today and pluged the modem cable to the modem-router and then the pc and it works. I haven't tried yet plugging a second pc to see what happens.

I used a few speed checkers and they maximum speed I got was just below 2Mb which is quite dissapointing considering I paid extra for 4Mb. I also downloaded nvidia drivers for the US (tried guru 3D as well) and the speed was just about 240Kb per second. With Sky and 8MB I used to download at 900Kb most of the time. I am using a 10 meters network cable, could this affect the speed?

Also about the cable router, if my downloading is about 250KB/S, what cable router I should buy? 54MB? 125MB? or 300MB?

cheers!!

First of all make sure you're actually on 4Mb. To do this you need to look at your modem's configuration page. However what you need to look for depends on the make of modem you have, it could be stated clearly on one of the pages, it could be tucked away as an entry in the modem's logs.

A 10m network cable won't make any difference, unless it's defective, in which case it probably wouldn't work full stop. Try a different cable if you feel the need, if you end up speaking to their tech support they'll probably ask you to do it anyway.

54Mbps is fine, and you'll find plenty of people round here willing to recommend one of these.

Thanks again Daegan, you are great help :)

what I get from the modem is this information:

Cable Modem : Euro-DOCSIS 1.0/1.1/2.0 Compliant
MAC Address : 00:14:A4:91:D4:75
Serial Number : 0014A491D475
Boot Code Version : 1.1.2c
Software Version : 2.111.1001
Hardware Version : 1.9

I am going to call them on Monday and demand the 4MB or just to downgrade price plan to 2 MB.
