I am much happier using wired than wireless however my gf has recently aquired a laptop which she wishes to use downstairs away from our current wired network using a Netgear RP614. At the moment she has a 15 metre cable running downstairs which isn't ideal. She also has a Netgear WG511T 108mbps wirless card and I would like to know which router would be the most suitable for our situation.

It must have wired option as I want to stick to wired upstairs on my desktop. Actually the wired connection speed is the priority. Are all wired connections the same speed and the only differences between products the wireless speed?

Would this be suitable? Netgear WGT624 108Mbps Wireless Firewall Router.

Yes that router should be fine. It has wireless and also has 4 x 10/100 Mbps ethernet ports so you can plug your wired network straight into it.

There are others that are faster but to get the full speed you will also need to buy a compatible wireless card for the laptop. The cards are often as expensive as the router itself so not really cost effective unless you are transfering large files all day long.

The router you asked about should be fine as it will run at 54 and 108 speed plus you can run your wired network as normal. If you are using wireless mainly for the internet then this will be plenty fast enough.

If she's already got a 108Mbps card, it should work fine at 108Mbps (though don't expect to actually be able to transfer files at 108Mbps).

She also has a Netgear WG511T 108mbps wirless card

could just get a wireless access point and plug it into your existing router. This is the method I use at home, I actually prefer it to an all in one box, if the wifi bums out you can just reboot the AP and leave the router as it is without interrupting wired clients.
