I'm getting a new case tomorrow, and was wondering if it is possible to buy these covers for the optical drive. There is a mesh pre-installed, but when I place my optical drive there, it has to go, thus leaving the ugly front of the optical drive exsposed. Is it possible to buy these 'flaps' that hide the optical drive and open when the drive opens? :)

There are some, but it depends what case you buy, some have preinstalled "toolless" locks, which will only let you install the drives at a certain point (normally flush with the front of the case). No idea if they come in a mesh though, most of them are just flush plastic.

You could mod it yourself?

Well, I first get it tomorrow, maybe tuesday, so will have to check it there. It's the Corsair 500R, but if there is no option to do it, I would probably look at modding it, but again, i don't have a clue as I dont have hands on it yet.

I assume others have tried it before :)

Well I have the 500R sitting next to me and you cant do it unless you render the toolless kit useless (you have to break it off).
Why dont you just stick the drive in the top bay so it blends with the top plastic and then the mesh starts below?

I've seen people do this with mods. Depends a bit on the case but normally you cut the legs off the mess cover and stick the cover to the disk tray. Add a small blob of something so when you push it the button on the drive gets hit more easily. You might also need to remove the cover of the drive to get it all flush.

Searching for 'stealth drive' should help but I can't find anything on your case. It is pretty much always the same method really.

I plan to stick my fan controller in the top slot.

Alright, will have a look once it arrives.
Honestly, this looks more like a plan, as it seems quite easy to do http://www.overclock.net/t/473401/tutorial-dvd-drive-stealth-guide-56k-warning

Hope it's ok to post this link.
