I have a Thermaltake Armor +MX and the front fan makes a grinding noise when I start the pc from cold.

It does this for about 5 minutes then it just stops and is then very quiet.

I know I can replace the fan but I have not been able to remove the hard drive cage, yes I have unscrewed it but I think something is wrong with mine it just doesn't budge.

I have also done a volt mod to quieten down the fan, I can't remember how I did it I just followed a guide but it involved moving the pins around.

Anyone got any advice as to how I can stop this grinding noise? Would spraying WD40 on the fan help?

Thanks

grinding noise? sounds like the bearings are going to me, not sure about your case but you could lubricate the bearings... If you can get to them. If it's not all the time grinding then you may as well try this there are numerous guides online on how to do it. The problem is you need access to your fan to do it

I wouldn't use WD40, it's a better water displacer than a lubricant (being kerosene based it evaporates after a couple of weeks).

A couple of drops of 3 in 1 would probably be ideal, if it does just need lubricating.

Edit: Thought I'd mention, if you don't have any 3-in-1, sewing machine oil is good too.
