Front LED lights on newer Audi's

European safety regs apparently, they're going to become more common on new european cars. The 911 is coming with them now too

They make the car stand out, so the purpose has been fulfilled.

Doesn't always work. Some burk pulled out of a sideroad straight into the path of my mother earlier in the week. She's got a Mk6 Golf which has DRLs (proper bulb rather than LEDs).

Burk : "I didn't see you"
Mum: "The headlights were on".

At least it's another Corsa off the road.

running lights are the future... it's just a matter of time.

sure BMW with angel eyes started them, but Audi have improved on the design to actually make them more useful.

i give it 5 years before we see most cars coming with LED running lights and more importantly LED headlights.... HID pah, just a low tech stop gap until proper solid state lighting takes over.

i cant wait, but then again i'm a lighting geek :-)

the goverments will have to rethink laws on lighting though as solid state lighting produces much more light for a given current. i have some 1amp light pods I'm working on that litrally could burn holes in your retina unless a carefully designed lens was used.

On the subject of lights why is it that all cars dont have automatic ones? I cannot imagine the technology can cost much more than about 11p these days and it would rule out all of this nonsense.

People have been driving and observing other road users for 80 odd years without the use of day running lights.

On the Advanced Driving Course you are taught to drive with main headlights or running lights on as it makes you more obvious to other road users. It's a safety point, but you could obviously debate the usefulness of that until the cows come home.

Wearing Seat Belts were not compulsory until 1983. We managed for 80 odd years without them as well. I doubt you'll find anyone who's not an american that will argue that they don't save lives.

As mentioned before - 2011 for running lights and you can spec new Toyota Prius with LED headlamps already...

I personally hate the day running lights.

And how all the cars I see with them on are Audi A4's or:

A vauxhall tigra & vectra, a peugeot 106 & 206 & 306 .....

Anyone who puts them on as an after market part really needs their head testing. And the cars I saw with them on aren't exactly 'trend setting' :)

They look nice on the right model of car (sport/s-line variants for example) so I don't care.

Probably some sort of retarded safety concept like the Volvo's.

volvos are made in a country where in winter the sun only comes up for a few hours, and even then its only dawn/dusk, not full sun up in the sky stuff... so makes sense really. not retarded at all.

Why head testing out of interest ?

They help you get noticed.. and being noticed on the road is going to lessen chance of someone failing to see you

They even look pretty smart if added properly...

As much as you hate them by sounds of it you will soon have no choice :)

In Slovakia it's the law, all running vehicles have to have lights on during the day. Random Fact....:D

Same with a number of eastern bloc countries and most of Scandinavia. Still only Volvos and Saabs that had the lights on with the ignition though when I was there which was a few years ago.

I personally like DRL's on any car as they do help make you seen by nugget drivers not paying attention. What I dont like about Audis DRL's though is the fact in the UK if you select them on they only light the front lights and you need to recode the car form the American to scandinavian setting to get the back lights on at the same time.

Yep, was going to post that. It is completely retarded, and annoying when you have auto headlights. Fortunately I never got pulled over the times I forgot to put them on.

It has only been law for a few years in Slovakia though IIRC.
