right had this for a while now and i have never been able to get the front mic working on it i can get the rear one working but never the front one i have checked all the seetings are right but still nothing any advise

What type of mic are you using? Theres a jumper on the rear of the I/O drive and if you are using a condenser mic you have to make sure the jumper is set to enable.
Also have yoiu connected the floppy power connector to the back of the drive?
If you take the cover off the optical out on the front of the bay it should be lit up red, if its not then youre not getting power to it.
with the rear port, make sure the mode is set to mic/line in in the mode settings. In entertainment mode its the last icon to the right labelled digital IO

right all the cables are pluged in the led is on the pci card i can get sound out od the headphone on the front port but still no mic, i couldnt find the jumper on the back of the fron panel am just wondering if its under the protective casing

ah, an easy one!
basically, go to your sound control panel - in this case the X-Fi control center. click 'mixer' and on the right of all the outputs is the 'Rec' fader. It will be in red and will probably say 'Mic' right now. Click that and in the drop down list select 'Mic2/Line In' and that will swap the input to the front mic input.
Be aware that some applications such as Skype, or some games, may 'automatically' swap this back to mic for you, so if it suddenly stops working again, just check the control panel as it may have been reset.

again, these need to be selected in the control panel.
