Front Panel Audio not working - Gigabyte H61

well .. a few days ago I was reading reviews of my board (H61-D3V) on new egg and there were a few saying front panel audio didnt work.. I hadn't tried mine.. I got to the 3rd one or so that said the front panel audio did not work (and like me, Gigabyte support dont reply either) - this guy had a fix which was to disable Auto Jack Detection, so I thought I would try mine, I pop in the headphones and right enough the sound doesnt come through and continues to play through the speakers... so i tried his fix and low-and-behold it worked!! - but that was on my windows 7 x64 install on my HDD while I awaited my new Samsung SSD to arrive... now its here and I have installed ALL the correct drivers as before I get no FP sound through headphones, no detection at all - the wires etc are in place correctly, I tried the fix again but this time it just did not work?

this is just 1 of 3 issues I have with this board?

can anyone help with this please?

thanks

do you have the option in the bios to set onboard sound to either ac97 or hdaudio? tested with both? as one will give you sound through front panel headphones, theres also a reg tweak that opens all the sound ports ill post it if the above doesnt work

hi wazza,

thanks for your continued support!

I have discovered that the Casecom MA-1199 case may be AC'97 audio and the mobo is HD Panel - thing is that tweaked worked before and now it doesnt?

in BIOS for Audio in Perihiperals it simply has ENABLED or DISABLED

I built this PC for Music Production.. Headphones is essential for when she is in bed hehe

thanks

i have the same thing with my gigabyte up4 th,no option in the bios to select either ac97 or hdaudio and my case only has an ac97 connector so i did this reg hack to open all the ports

id try uninstalling and re installing the realtek sound drivers first though but for me i dont use them i just use what windows installs as i find the sound quality to be better

heres the reg tweak

Use REGEDIT:

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}000\GlobalSettings
Change the value EnableDynamicDevices to zero.
Reboot

This will entirely disable the win7 jack detection feature. All ports will be seen regardless of having a connection or not. You can then use the sound control panel to disable any ports you'd want to prevent being used (like extra SPDIF and Mic ports on my creative USB devices).

works fine as ive used it myself

ah-ha

I see what u mean, when its disabled it gives you the option too choose head-phones or speakers in the tray!! - nice fix...BUT.. i have poor audio set up at moment and like to use the EQ to add some low and high end, and also change audio quality from 24-bit/48Khz to 16-Bit/44.1Khz as uses less processing and I dont want my audio re-sampled when im working in a 16/44.1 audio production environment - for a 2nd time i uninstalled the ms driver, reboot and re-install Realtek and disabled Jack Detection, its worked this time but the back panel doesnt turn off..not bothered about that I can turn off the speakers :)

I will bookmark your fix though as I know 2 people who will use it :)

so is this down to putting an AC97 block on HD_AUDIO pins? you'd think that Fpanel on cases these days would be wired for HD..? surely its just a change of design, no extra parts or cost?

thanks a million for your help :)

you can use realtek drivers along with that reg tweak if disabling jack detection wont work

and yeah theres two types of block connector ac97 and hdaudio, mines an oldish/budget case so im lumbered with just ac97

both are the same sound quality its just hdaudio has jack detection where it detects when youve plugged a speaker in or mutes the rear speakers ect

if you explore the headphone properties with the microsoft drivers you can improve the sound by enabling headphone bass boost, gives you loads of bass, also lets you change the khz range

oh i did have a look in the MS settings...mustnt have went deep enough.

when i first looked for the reg value it wasnt there as realtek was installed, so i uninstalled and installed MS and the value was there, now its there once ove put realtek back in?? its not cos i edited it because I reinstalled MS driver before installing RT and it reset it back to "1" ...strange

im gunna put it back to "0" with realtek installed and see what happens? suppose I will have both options :)

but AC97 and HD_Audio use same block yes? so why dont case manu's just wire the block for HD_Audio? are there still AC97 motherboards for sale?

not sure, pretty much all motherboard support either ac or hd audio, its the cases that sometimes cheap out, some come with one or the other,my last case an nzxt can with both connectors and you could choose which one to fit

heres the settings for headphones

well i set the reg hack to ZERO with realtek installed but it doesnt let me choose headphones from the volume setting like it does without RT installed ... never mind Im glad i know both methods AND the cause... you wouldnt believe ive built countless computers without hitch for other people over the years lol... 7 years on and still learning hehe

thanks again matey :)

Casecom make very budget cases, almost all good quality modern cases have HD Audio front panels.

yeah, I built a cheap one for a friend 2 years ago and is Fpanel doesnt work either lol... Casecom case with Gigabyte Mobo...

glad I know about it now anyway and how to fix it
