Hi,

I've just joined this forum for some good advice---

I wish to build a PC or two and sort out one or two that need some attention but I'm a newbie at this so go ez....

I've already got some bits n bats on the way to help get me started and familiarising myself with certain aspects of the MOBO / case etc.....

On one of the PC's I've got is a 4U Case. On the front is the front panel connections for the PC to boot the PC with some buttons on to reset with an activity light or two etc....-that's not my concern here.

Looking into the case is a long white cable (could be shorter IMO) which connects to 2 USB ports and the controls of the front panel connector with a snake cable for all the associated features the front panel provides.

My question is do front panel connections usually come with a PC case as standard whenever someone buys a new PC case? - It seems like they may do but I don't know which is why I ask - apologies if this is too basic for you guys.....:)

And are there many manufacturers that make these to be sold to fit into cases that are going to be modded?-

EG. I may remove mine and get a shorter cable for example....

I've looked in the shop here and I've found one made by NZXT - but none other yet.

Good advice here please then I'll move on to the next thing I need help on and maybe I'll not be a newb on this for too long.....and have more control over my systems....Thanks

I can ask some stupid questions...;)....tomorrow the anti static mat etc arrive so I'll whoop the HD's out within the cage plus the DVD drives so I can see the cables in question properly - It looks like there are pull out connectors for the front panel - I'm so green at this I don't know 100% what I'm dealing with but I will.....

further up the forum list is a "current project" forum that I may go take a look at.....and that'll be a good start.....

Anyhow drop by and say hi and I'll try to keep the stupid questions to a minimum.....:)

Hey welcome to forums ! Dont be silly with questions everyone has to lstart learning some where!

So here we go; yes cases have the front connectors attached to the case these are normally pretty generic depending on the year of this case as hardware changes from time to time

So most likely the nzxt cables will fit but not 100%.you may find the cable braiding thread helpfull as it shows some cool modding tips for braiding there that might take your fancy but as for pre mad front panel case cables .I think youmight find it hard as there are so many different shapes and sizes but you might be able to pop the ends off and and shorten cables reattach all though im not 100% on this idea.

Thanks so much for your reply - I was expecting some serious leg pulling.....:p

I used PC's for several years now so its a natural step for me to take but one that I was reluctant to undertake as its setting me back and adding another serious learning curve in life but I realise it will help me massively in the longer run.

I would stick with pre-made cables so wouldn't bother with shortening them as that sound so technical. When I take the drives out I'll see whats what exactly and take it from there. I was presuming that I could get an identical cable or similar but just shorter so I'd need to source one with your help here if need be.

I did see the braiding tutorial and was completely lost by the title - "braiding" - I thought "wt* is that?" - Now I've seen it, the first question I asked myself was:

why would someone want to do that?

Is it to make the cables look nice and pretty? - yes probably

or is there a scientific/technical reason for doing this? -

Yes some of what I saw did take my fancy and with all the advice on everything from tools through to the mesh of the cable eg. dense or fine I can see if I hang out here over time I'll learn lots and lots and lots. Just need to pace myself and be systematic about it all.:)
