I quite like the concept of pbem games where you play a turn, then your opponent plays a turn but you don't have to be online whilst you are waiting for your opponent to play.

Frozen Synapse is a tactical rainbow 5 style strategy where you control a squad and your opponent controls a squad with the objective being to take out the other squad.

It's just gone into preorder with preorders giving you instant access to the beta as well as an extra copy on release to give to a friend

Details are here

Price is £16.99 - i've preordered so hopefully can find some others to team up with. Not sure of the NDA - as soon as I know more I will post as much as allowed.

I've only been given one pass so far. I suspect the free game is on release. Could be worth posting on their forums re this as it makes more sense having the mate play at this stage as well.

** Edit I have posted the question on their forums

Thanks for the heads up.

Looks promising.

Another FREE key for a friend - they will get beta access and the full version of the game on release
Full version of the game on release: no extra charge*

*Release target: late 2010; the current version of the game you will receive immediately is a WORK-IN-PROGRESS BETA VERSION that will be regularly updated. It is not feature-complete and you may experience bugs.

Wow - where to start, first off this game is a lot of fun if you like turn based games. You give your squad orders and when your opponent has submitted his away they go. The planning stage is very well done with you able to simulare what you opponent will do by giving his unit orders. It works incredibly well. The game browser is well done - although you get the impression that they have been a little swamped as game loading is laggy - i.e you click the game and it takes a time to come up - however actual game is fine.

Free key - confirmed each game has a free key available to give out right from the start so people can just split the costs 50/50 - seems a good idea to get the game under that magic £10 mark :)

Really quite impressed at this stage

Ask away :)

certainly looks interesting, may very well get this. Would be a lot more interested if it had coop 2v2 capabilities or maybe a free for all 1v1v1v1 or some other player amounts.

OK.. an heads up.

http://www.indiedb.com/games/frozen-synapse/news/frozen-synapse-is-coming-to-steam-in-2011

The news I have been waiting for:

Yay, basically!

We're pleased to announce that we'll be hitting Valve's world-leading distribution service when we release Frozen Synapse in Q1 2011.

This will give us a much better shot at hitting a really significant audience; we think the game will be a good fit for Steam.

I want to say thanks very much to everyone who has championed the game so far, especially those who specifically showed their support for a Steam release.

Now, here's some important info...

Valve have offered a free Steam key for Frozen Synapse to anyone purchasing it direct from www.frozensynapse.com, where it is currently available for pre-order.

This will enable everyone to receive the benefits of the Steam version with no extra cost, as all existing Mode 7 customers will all also receive a key.

This means that you will get any and all benefits of the Steam version, irrespective of where you buy the game. So please, go ahead and pre-order if you want to support us - you'll still get a free copy of the game for a friend and some other stuff too if you buy one of our bundles.

We're not yet ready to announce our specific plans for Steam integration, but things like achievements and easy matchmaking are definitely on the agenda. We'll be devoting some time to that as we get further towards the end of development. We really, really want to make sure we make the most of being on there and the cool community features we will have at our disposal.

How this process works:

1. You buy now and receive access to the current beta immediately
2. You also receive another beta key (and, eventually, full version) which you can give to a friend
3. We will release updates to the beta version whenever new features and fixes are introduced
4. On release, both you and your friend will receive the full version of the game with no extra charge, as well as free keys to add the game to Steam

Who wants to go halves?

Bought this tonight and Ive had a great time with it, I even managed to win a round . Aside from not having the sp campaign theres
a fair amount of content and people seem to be lining up to kick my arse.

Seems like the sort of game thats fun even if you lose, plus Im learning from each of my many, many mistakes.

Just going to give a bump to this, the game is entering the final stages of beta, just gone 50/50 with a friend for it since they are still doing the get a free key offer.

It should be released on steam soon but it may be worth getting it now while its cheaper and they are doing the free key offer.

A minute left till its done downloading, might throw up a small review :)

It's a great game, the beta includes the single player campaign to play and so far it's polished and good fun, altho I suck vs players !! :p
