Fruit picking abroad?

At the moment I don't have the urge to get in a proper job, I just want to earn some money and enjoy a couple of years.

Would fruit picking abroad be an option? I've heard some people raving about it, but it sounds like it'd be more like slave labour?

What does it cost? Is it even worth me considering it? Would it mean anything in terms of improving my employment prospects in the UK?

Cheers.

Europe. Just browsing the different countries, but I have no idea what I'm doing to be honest.

This is really just a bit of cash income for backpackers. Not something to think about longer than a month.

Mind you, I have not done this, so have no input!

In order:
The fruit farms will generally give you board and lodgings plus a small amount of pocket money as far as I understand it so the net cost to you should be the ticket to wherever you go.

It depends, it is seasonal of course and will tend to be long hours with quite a lot of hard/uncomfortable work but you'll be outdoors and I'd imagine it can be quite good fun. If you're happy with that then it's certainly worth considering.

I don't think it would significantly, you'd be doing a transient job so that in and of itself isn't particularly desirable but equally it may be something that distinguishes you from other job applicants so depending on how you sell the experience to future employers it might be enough to influence their decision.

It sounds a lot like voluntary slave labour just for a bit of a sun tan. There are plenty of dead end jobs you could get in the UK for more money, then save up and take a holiday.

Much (much) more sensible to do a few months work in the UK, save the money and then travel at your leisure, rather than be an Aussie (or wherever) farmers bitchslave, and have no real cash to enjoy your trip.

Go to Australia for a couple of years. A general dogsbody salary is about 60k AUD (£40k).

Sure it's more expensive, but live cheaply, have fun somewhere hot like Brisbane and come back with some cash.

Go work on a holiday park somewhere! Much better than picking fruit and a good chance of pasty on a regular basis :D

Got a friend who works on a Disney cruise ship, pretty amazing some of the places she goes to.

Will, what did you graduate it in at Uni? And when did you graduate?

If you're interesting in just living/working in another country for a while then have a look into WWOOFING. Generally you'll work on a farm for four hours a day in exchange for somewhere to sleep & food.

You won't get paid though, so it'll be more of a travel experience than anything else.
